Keys Energy worker electrocuted on Big Pine Key

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. -- Deputies say a Keys Energy Services worked was electrocuted as he worked on the roof of a home in the Florida Keys.

When Monroe County Sheriff's arrived at the Big Pine Key home Thursday night, they found 29-year-old Michael Euliss Jr. administering CPR to his 28-year-old co-worker Joshua Yarborough.

The deputies climbed onto the roof and took over performing CPR until a rescue team arrived. They used a bucket truck from Keys Energy to bring Yarborough down from the roof. He was taken to Fisherman's Hospital in Marathon where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say Yarborough and Euliss were on duty for Keys Energy when the incident took place.

The sheriff's office's major crimes unit is investigating.

No further details were immediately available.

If flooding is a possibility, keep a stock of sandbags in the garage or shed to help prevent rising waters coming into your house through the doors.

Tip 3:?Clear the basement
Homes with cellars or basements are particularly vulnerable to internal damage from floodwater. If there?s a flood risk, keep any rooms that are below ground level free of valuables and soft furnishings.

Tip 4: Move upstairs
As soon as you know a flood?s on its way, move all valuable items, including electrical equipment, to an upper floor.

Tip 5:?Pull the plug
Before the water hits, (never touch electrical appliances near water) unplug any large appliances that can?t be moved upstairs, such as washing machines or cookers. If you have to evacuate your home before it?s flooded turn off the electricity at the mains to reduce the risk of shock or fire. You may also want to contact your gas supplier to discuss whether it needs to be turned off.

Tip 6:?Plan for your pets
Move outdoor pets, such as rabbits and guinea pigs, into your home, and keep dogs and cats safely inside. If possible, it?s a good idea to ask friends or relatives who are not affected to look after your animals.

Tip 7:?Up on the roof
Flooding isn?t the only damage caused by wet weather. High winds can bring rain into your home through poorly maintained roofs. Loose tiles should be fixed firmly in place and any that are broken should be replaced.

Tip 8:?Clear thinking
Storms can also overload gutters and downpipes, creating additional water damage. Make sure rain can?t get in, by keeping gutters clear and making sure doors and windows fit securely.

Tip 9:?Get in touch
If you have been affected by a flood, phone your insurer as soon as possible as they can offer you helpful and practical advice ? even if you don?t want to make a claim.

Tip 10:?Put safety first
Even when flooding subsides, it might not be safe to enter your home because of the effect water has had on the wiring. It?s worth swatting up on information from the Electrical Safety Council ? it details what you may need to do after a flood has damaged your property.

Gamers to O and Joe: ?You Gotta Go? | Misfit Politics

For some time now I?ve been using the biggest megaphones I could find to get the conservative community paying more attention to video games and the ever-growing but already massive community, in an attempt to recognize its importance in today?s social and industrial world.

As you should all know by now, I?m a gamer and I love to spend my downtime fragging?12-year-olds who think up all sorts of creative ways to inform me on how my mother is a whore. It?s just fun and there?s no denying that. So when I see my preferred gaming platform, the XBox 360 getting involved in the elections, my heart soars . . . and also feels a little worried.

The first red flag for me was finding out that NBC was hosting this little shindig and was backed by the fact the number one clip I first watched was Chris Matthews not shutting the hell up in a debate about how the GOP is using the race card, because nobody knows racial attacks like an old rich white guy. In fact, every video I?ve watched on it so far is from MSNBC. The last thing I want is Andrea Mitchell talking to the kiddos about the ?tone of the GOP convention? while the liberals stand outside wearing their oh-so-classy giant vagina suits, and giving us a visual representation of what the world has been saying about hard-core liberals since day one.?One video after another featured commentary on the ?obstructionist Tea Party? or ?the attacks on Obama.? If they had put horns and a goatee on a photo of Mitt Romney and had monkeys throw their own crap at it, it would have amounted to the same thing.

I sometimes thank the Big Guy upstairs that kids are more concerned with digitally blowing each others heads off then listening to MSNBC hosts make up stuff about a couple of imperfect but pretty squeaky-clean guys. It was very disconcerting that this trash was being filtered through my holy ground . . . my place of peace.

It didn?t help that one of the featured videos on the front page for this election coverage bore the title ?Perez on voting.? As some of know Perez Hilton is a celebrity pundit who keeps track of Hollywood while belittling everyone who disagrees with him. He?s like a pudgier Dan Savage who gets punched in the face for talking smack to other celebs. You can watch the vid they?re showing the kids here.

The video is primarily harmless except at certain points when the big, white, rich, bad guys are hovering over the good peoples of America with cigars and a dude with a hat circa 1776, the visual representations at the end are off-setting to such things as the legalization of weed. Keep in mind, this video was geared toward the youth and so they used celebs the youth is used to seeing, but I?m not sure Perez Hilton, who posts up-skirt shots of Miley Cyrus (pre-legal age), is the best guy to talk to our kids about voting.

I was dismayed, yet not surprised. The gaming community has been in the crosshairs of the liberal media for some time and they are slowly but surely weaseling their way in . . .

. . . but LO! I looked, and there was a poll, and in that poll the Xbox LIVE community did vote and the discoveries I made were quite?intriguing. Take a look for yourself at these results I took on my camera phone . . .

I was so surprised that it took me five minutes to reel my jaw back off the floor. It would seem that the gaming community is sick of Obambi as well. Hilarious that he?s applauded for having the youth vote down pat but this says otherwise! The gaming community is ready to have him out!

But it didn?t stop there . . .

You blow, Joe and we have spoken. You?ll never see this on any major news sites, but this is MAJOR NEWS!

I was so pleased to see this news I could have done cartwheels by pressing down, down, a+b . . . I?m a gamer, not a gymnast. I went on to see that Microsoft was not gonna make this a lefty-slanted thing at all. I could have hugged them . . . by pressing up+y. I also discovered this very interesting non-partisan website that states very interesting facts on a wide range of topics from our national debt to women?s pregnancies called Face The Facts USA, which is now a website I will be frequenting since it?s presented in such a way that?s easy to understand.

So Microsoft is not only playing host to NBC?s brand of political coverage, which is a dark strike against them, but it?s also not giving in to a total slant. Watch a few videos of Chris Matthews being an ass, then go see that half the stuff he said is complete bull in some of the websites they list as well. Hear Perez Hilton talk about voting, and then go piss him off by voting against Obama.

The video game world just keeps getting more and more fun.

The new device, which looks like a camera in the front and a smartphone in the back, runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and allows users to shoot, edit and share pictures with their social networks. But perhaps one of the most innovative features of the Galaxy Camera is its voice-control capabilities. You can tell the device to "zoom in" and "shoot" while snapping pictures.

DALLAS Aug. 28, 2012 Men who have been treated for prostate cancer, either with surgery or radiation, could benefit from taking aspirin regularly, says a new study that includes a researcher at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Taking aspirin is associated with a lower risk of death from prostate cancer, especially in men with high risk disease, according to a multicenter study published in today's issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Kevin Choe, assistant professor of radiation oncology at UT Southwestern, is first author of the paper.

Preclinical studies have shown that aspirin and other anticoagulation medications may inhibit cancer growth and metastasis, but clinical data have been limited previously. The study looked at almost 6,000 men in the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor (CaPSURE) database who had prostate cancer treated with surgery or radiotherapy.

About 2,200 of the men involved 37 percent were receiving anticoagulants (warfarin, clopidogrel, enoxaparin, and/or aspirin). The risk of death from prostate cancer was compared between those taking anticoagulants and those who were not.

The findings demonstrated that 10-year mortality from prostate cancer was significantly lower in the group taking anticoagulants, compared to the non-anticoagulant group 3 percent versus 8 percent, respectively. The risks of cancer recurrence and bone metastasis also were significantly lower. Further analysis suggested that this benefit was primarily derived from taking aspirin, as opposed to other types of anticoagulants.

The suggestion that aspirin, a frequently prescribed and relatively well-tolerated medication, may improve outcomes in prostate cancer is of particular interest, Dr. Choe said, since prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among men and the second-leading cancer killer in the U.S.

"The results from this study suggest that aspirin prevents the growth of tumor cells in prostate cancer, especially in high-risk prostate cancer, for which we do not have a very good treatment currently," Dr. Choe said. "But we need to better understand the optimal use of aspirin before routinely recommending it to all prostate cancer patients."

Selective imprinting: how the wallaby controls growth of its young

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Marsupial mothers regulate the composition of their milk so that it is optimal for the development stage of their young. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Epigenetics & Chromatin shows that, similar to the human placenta, which regulates embryonic growth and development, insulin appears to be imprinted in the marsupial mammary gland.

Insulin is well known as the hormone which regulates blood sugar levels but it also essential for proper functioning of the nervous system, protein synthesis, and for cell growth and survival. It is also required for lactation in mammals and, along with insulin growth factor 2 (IGF2), is present in milk.

Imprinting is a way of controlling gene expression. To ensure only one copy of a certain gene is active (monoallelic), the other copy is silenced, usually by methylation. Imprinting is established during sperm or egg production so that the developing embryo inherits paternally imprinted genes from its father, and maternally imprinted from its mother. Consequently the active copy is inherited only from either the mother or father. However this is complicated by imprinting being both tissue specific and dependent on the stage of development.

Insulin was thought to be only imprinted in the yolk sac of mice and humans and only in the wallaby yolk sac placenta, however, in marsupials much of this growth and development occurs after birth and is controlled instead by milk that changes composition throughout lactation. The University of Melbourne looked at whether the gene wallaby mammary gland is similarly imprinted, if it was also imprinted in the pouch young (joey), and whether this imprinting was maternally or paternally inherited.

The team found that insulin gene (INS) expression in the adult tammar wallaby mammary gland was monoallelic (one active copy), indicating imprinting and that this active copy came from the father. Paternally inherited monoallelic INS expression was also discovered in both the adult and the young tammar liver, but not in other tissues tested. IGF2 was also monoallelic in the mammary gland but the relative expression of INS and IGF2 differed during lactation. IGF2 expression in the mammary gland decreased after the first few days but INS expression increased as the babies became more mature especially between 5 and 14 weeks of age.

Prof Marilyn Renfree, who led this project commented, "This is the first indication that genomic imprinting occurs in the marsupial mammary gland and suggests that genomic imprinting in the mammary gland may be as critical for regulating post-natal growth as it is for regulating pre-natal growth in the placenta in all mammals."

The New Pandora for Android Looks Great, Makes It Easy to Bookmark and Save Songs You Love [Streaming Music]

Android: Streaming music service Pandora updated its Android app this week, giving it a much-needed UI makeover, an updated song history that now lets you go back and bookmark and review tracks as well as just rate them, and more detailed bios, discographies, and similar artists.

Much of the update is skin deep, but that's okay: Pandora's UI needed an update, and the new version is much cleaner. Artist bios and discographies?which were barely functional in previous verisons?are actually useful now, and the ability to easily go back through previously played songs to bookmark and rate them is a big improvement. The new version is available now at Google Play.

Norway's Breivik deemed sane, sentenced to prison

OSLO, Norway (AP) ? A Norwegian court sentenced Anders Behring Breivik to prison on Friday, denying prosecutors the insanity ruling they hoped would show that his massacre of 77 people was the work of a madman, not part of an anti-Muslim crusade.

Breivik smiled with apparent satisfaction when Judge Wenche Elisabeth Arntzen read the ruling, declaring him sane enough to be held criminally responsible and sentencing him to "preventive detention," which means it is unlikely he will ever be released.

The sentence brings a form of closure to Norway, which was shaken to its core by the bomb and gun attacks on July 22, 2011, because Breivik's lawyers said before the ruling that he would not appeal any ruling that did not declare him insane.

But it also means Breivik got what he wanted: a ruling that paints him as a political terrorist instead of a psychotic mass murderer. Since his arrest, Breivik has said the attacks were meant to draw attention to his extreme right-wing ideology and to inspire a multi-decade uprising by "militant nationalists" across Europe.

Prosecutors had argued Breivik was insane as he plotted his attacks to draw attention to a rambling "manifesto" that blamed Muslim immigration for the disintegration of European society.

Breivik argued that authorities were trying to cast him as sick to cast doubt on his political views, and said during the trial that being sent to an insane asylum would be the worst thing that could happen to him.

"He has always seen himself as sane so he isn't surprised by the ruling," Breivik's defense lawyer Geir Lippestad said.

The five-judge panel in the Oslo district court unanimously convicted Breivik, 33, of terrorism and premeditated murder and ordered him imprisoned for a period between 10 and 21 years, the maximum allowed under Norwegian law. Such sentences can be extended as long as an inmate is considered too dangerous to be released, and legal experts say Breivik will almost certainly spend the rest of his life in prison.

It was not clear whether prosecutors would appeal the ruling. If not, and if Breivik sticks to his word not to appeal a prison term, the legal process for one of the darkest chapters in Norwegian history will have come to a close.

Survivors of the attacks and relatives of victims welcomed the ruling.

"I am very relieved and happy about the outcome," said Tore Sinding Bekkedal, who survived the Utoya shooting.

"I believe he is mad, but it is political madness and not psychiatric madness," Bekkedal said. "He is a pathetic and sad little person."

Wearing a dark suit and sporting a thin beard, Breivik smirked as he walked into the courtroom to hear his sentence, and raised a clenched-fist salute.

Breivik confessed to the attacks during the trial, describing in gruesome detail how he detonated a car bomb at the government headquarters in Oslo and then opened fire at the annual summer camp of the governing Labor Party's youth wing. Eight people were killed and more than 200 injured by the explosion. Sixty-nine people, most of them teenagers, were killed in the shooting spree on Utoya island. The youngest victim was 14.

Breivik's lawyers say he is already at work writing sequels to the 1,500-page manifesto he released on the Internet before the attacks. Breivik most likely will be sent back to Ila Prison, where he has been held in pretrial detention. He has access to a computer there but no Internet connection. He can communicate with the outside world through mail, which is checked by prison staff.

The impact of Breivik's violence has been huge. It has forced Norway to accept that terror doesn't come only in the guise of foreign fundamentalists, but can come from one of their own. The son of a Norwegian diplomat and a nurse who divorced when he was a child, Breivik had been a law-abiding citizen until the attacks, except for a brief spell of spray-painting graffiti during his youth.

The judges noted that Breivik's extreme anti-immigration views are shared by others, but said it found no evidence that the modern-day crusader network that Breivik claims to belong to, exists.

Norwegian police and government ministers have faced severe criticism for their actions before and during the attacks. The police response was marred by poor communication and technical mishaps. It took police more than an hour to reach Utoya, as a boat carrying the SWAT team was overloaded and stalled in the middle of the lake. Norway's only police helicopter wasn't used because its crew was on vacation.

Norway's justice minister and police chief both resigned in the aftermath and some critics have called on the prime minister to step down.

The judges took turns reading sections of the 90-page ruling, starting with the verdict and sentence, and then going over a chronology of the rampage, victim by victim, and describing their injuries.

Judge Arne Lyng noted that the fertilizer bomb that Breivik set off outside the government headquarters could have been even more devastating.

"It was pure luck that not many more were killed," Lyng said.

Since his guilt was not in question, Brevik's sanity was the key issue to be decided by the trial, with two psychiatric teams reaching opposite conclusions. One gave Breivik a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, a severe mental illness that would preclude imprisonment, while the other found him narcissistic and dissocial ? having a complete disregard for others ? but criminally sane.

Reuters reports. ?Small-scale irrigation technology, such as motorized pumps and hosing to access groundwater, could cost a sub-Saharan African smallholder $250 or more but could improve crop yields by between 75 and 275 percent, the report said,? Reuters adds. ?If there is more investment in small-scale irrigation, it means food supply in those countries is more secure. It won?t replace the need for staple cereal crops, but it gives farmers more insurance against a food crisis,? said Colin Chartres, IWMI director general, according to the news service.

Business investment fell by 1.5% in the quarter as fears over the Eurozone and a lack of access to funding weighs, while exports fell by 1.7% following the recent GBP strength and the lack of global aggregate demand. This paints a picture of an economy that is holding on grimly to some semblance of performance and that further headwinds from the Eurozone or elsewhere could be catastrophic.

Annalisa Piazza at Newedge Strategy adds that the picture still remains "very weak":

The expenditure breakdown shows a very sluggish picture for the UK economy, due to the combination of the slower business cycle and negative effects of the Jubilee liong weekend in early June.

Looking at the main sectors, industrial activity fell by 0.9% q/q, partially affected by the closure of some plants during the long weekend in June. The services industry fell by a modest 0.1% q/q whilst the construction sector remained a major drag, falling by nearly 4%. part of the decline might be seen as an effect of bad weather conditions in June.

All in all, some one-off factors might explain part of the 0.5% decline in UK GDP. However, we still see a very weak picture in the details and no signs that the economy might recover any time soon.

09.46 Although the the second-quarter recession is shallower than initially feared, commentators point out that the overall picture is still none too rosy.

09.31 As expected, Britain's GDP has been revised up to a -0.5pc contraction in the second quarter, compared to the previous estimate of a 0.7pc shrink.

The contraction might have been less than previously feared, but it's still the biggest quarterly fall in GDP since the first quarter of 2009.

09.13 The timing of these talks between Merkel and Samaras appear to be a bit of a movable feast; it now appears they will kick off at 10.45 UK time.

Other political events happening today include a Spanish cabinet meeting and Italy's Mario Monti is also meeting with his cabinet to review their new plan to spur economic growth.

08.47 Even though Angela Merkel and Antonis Samaras are meeting for crisis talks today, we're not expecting any decisions to come out of the chinwag.

Earlier this week when the German chancellor visited the Molodvan capital, Chisinau, she said "we won't find solutions on Friday", reiterating that leaders must await a report being drawn up by the troika of Greece's international creditors.

08.34 Even as Angela Merkel meets Antonis Samaras, the German government is reportedly calculating the economic cost of a Greek exit from the eurozone.

A special working group, led by deputy finance minister Thomas Steffen, is working on scenarios in the case that Greece is forced to withdraw from the 17-nation bloc, the Financial Times Deutschland reported today.

"Colleagues are making calculations about the financial consequences [of an exit] and are considering how a domino effect on other euro member states might be prevented," it quoted a finance industry source as saying.

The ten-member working group, which is made up of officials from various departments of the finance ministry, wanted to be fully prepared for a possible "negative scenario," the source added.

08.25 Antonis Samaras might be expected to ask Angela Merkel for more breathing space, but others are urging Greece to press ahead with tough reforms.

Klaus Regling, the head of the European Stability Facility - Europe's bailout fund, has said that Greece's future in the eurozone depends on Athens' ability to implement painful economic reforms. Giving a lecture in Singapore, he said:

Nobody wants to see Greece leave the euro area. It would be the most expensive solution for Greece and for other member states, and I also don't want to see Greece leave.

But it's also true that it depends on Greek action. They must implement the structural and fiscal adjustments they committed to undertake in exchange for receiving financial assistance.

They have to deliver, otherwise financial assistance could stop, not because we want it to stop but two sides of the bargain have to be in place.

08.15 On the subject of economic data, we're also expecting the latest estimate of Britain's GDP today. In July, figures showed that the UK economy contracted by 0.7pc in the three months to the end of June.

But, the Office for National Statistics is now expected to revise up its initial estimate of second-quarter GDP to -0.5pc in light of better-than-expected construction and industrial production figures.

08.10 The latest round of eurozone shuttle diplomacy comes against a backdrop of economic ill health. Disapponting data yesterday showed the downturn in the eurozone economy had extended into a seventh month, with the composite index coming in at 46.6 in August, compared to 46.5 in July. A number below 50 marks a contraction.

Services activity shrank to 47.5 from 47.9, marking a two-month low. Manufacturing output ticked up, however, rising to 44.6 from 43.4 in July.

Rob Dobson, senior economist at Markit, commented:

The August Markit Eurozone Flash PMI reinforces the prevailing view of the economy dropping back into recession during the third quarter of 2012. Taken together, the July and August readings would historically be consistent with GDP falling by around 0.5%-0.6% quarter-on-quarter, so it would take a substantial bounce in September to change this outlook.

08.05 Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras is travelling to Berlin for talks today with Angela Merkel in an effort to gain some breathing space for his crisis-wracked country. The talks should start at around 11.45 UK time.

Their chinwag follows a meeting between Mrs Merkel and Francois Hollande yesterday, where the German chancellor urged Greece to stick to its reforms, saying:

It?s important to me that we all stand by our obligations and wait for the troika report and see what the result is. We and I will encourage Greece to pursue the path of reform that demands a lot from the people.
