Two Italians held in Syria released: Syria state TV

BEIRUT/ROME (Reuters) - Syrian forces freed two Italians workers from a group of rebels who kidnapped them earlier this month, Syrian state media said on Saturday.

Italy's foreign minister described the news of the release as a positive development.

"Our forces have managed to release two Italians who were kidnapped by terrorists in the Damascus countryside," state television said on Saturday.

The Italians, employees of a subcontractor for energy technology group Ansaldo Energia, were detained by armed men on July 17 as they drove to the airport to fly out of the country, according to Italian media.

"The release of our two nationals by the groups that held them in the last few days is a very positive development," Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said in a statement.

"We continue to follow developments through all available channels, to arrive at a swift conclusion," he said without offering any other details.

A report in Italian daily Secolo XIX had said last Saturday that the men were travelling in a convoy of 20 staff who worked for Ansaldo when they were captured.

The two men had become separated from the group when it was stopped and ended up in the hands of a rebel group, the newspaper said, citing a colleague of the men who managed to leave Damascus. The others made it home safely.

Provide a Dog with Good Oral Health | Anti-Aging

Health and Fitness | Anti-Aging | * Written by Edward Swan | Friday, 27 July 2012 16:58 | Word Count: 355

Establishing and maintaining good levels of oral health is important for both humans and animals to ensure they can enjoy a quality of life. Each part of the mouth area, from the teeth to the jaws, combines to allow a person or animal to effectively breathe, communicate and eat food. It is therefore essential to ensure a set of teeth remain sharp and clean to preserve their quality and be able to carry out cognitive functions without any pain.
Although animals in the wild are required to fend for themselves and maintain their own quality of teeth, those which are bought as pets place the responsibility on their owner?s shoulders. All owners take on the role of looking after the safety and wellbeing of their pet to ensure the environment is suitable for their naturalistic requirements. Additionally, they are responsible for providing their pet with a level of nutrition required to keep their body and overall health in prime condition.
Due to the abundance of energy and excitement they exude, dogs require ample portions of animal feed on a daily basis. This not only helps to strengthen their core body muscles and bones, but also provides the nutrients and vitamins needed to be active and move freely.
Typical products specifically created for dogs are available in wet and dry dog food form. The former is usually contained within a sealed tin with a flavoured jelly providing a moist, flavour-packed meal, whilst the latter is kept in a thick bag to preserve its dry nature.
As brushing the teeth of a dog can be an almost impossible task, owners must find other ways of promoting oral health for their pet. While such animal feed is beneficial for the substantial levels of vitamin and nutrients packed within each product, dry dog food can play a key role in preserving the quality of a dog?s teeth. The rough and tough nature of dry food provides dog with a level of jaw work required to keep their teeth strong and clean.
Specialist dental biscuits can also be purchased to further enhance a dog?s oral health. This is to ensure they can enjoy eating without any pain, whilst receiving the intake of nutrients required to own a happy, healthy canine.

Boise Idaho Foreclosures Plummet Through ... - Boise Real Estate

Boise Idaho foreclosures have hit the lowest rate since March 2009, when the Intermountain MLS first began keeping track of foreclosure sales. In fact, the market share of these Boise ID foreclosures, otherwise known as bank-owned homes (REO)*, have been steadily declining since the beginning of the year. In January 2012, the foreclosure market share was 35%, the same as January 2011. That, however, is where the similarity ends.

Boise Idaho Foreclosures | Year Over Year Comparison

As can be seen above, February 2012 recorded a market share of 25%, compared to 35.2% in February 2011. This trend continues through the remainder of the first half of the year. In June 2012, 45 out of 406 total sales were bank-owned or HUD properties, representing an 11.1% market share. In June 2011, there were 119 foreclosures out of 352 total sales, or a 33.8% market share, 3 times higher 2012.

Since January 1, 2012, there have been a total of 356 foreclosures in Boise Idaho. The majority of these, 22.8%, were properties located in the SW Boise-Meridian area. W Boise-Garden City recorded 18% of the Boise Idaho foreclosures for the first half of 2012. ?Rounding out the top five are the Boise Bench with 15.7%, West Boise with 11.5% and 10.1% in NW Boise. On the bottom were Garden City with a 0.6% market share and 0% in NE Boise.

Boise Idaho Foreclosures | Area Comparison June 2012

Consumers are always looking to get the best value for their dollar, and home buyers are no different. Since the beginning of ?the housing crisis, buyers have been aggressively searching for Boise Idaho foreclosures. Today, however, inventory in general is down and there are fewer foreclosure properties on the market, making the purchase of bank-owned and HUD properties a little more competitive and creating more multiple-offer situations.

If you would like information on Boise Idaho foreclosures, or would like a complete list of foreclosure properties on the Boise real estate market, feel free to contact us at 208-484-2560.

*HUD-owned properties have been included in these foreclosure numbers.? While they are not ?bank-owned?, they are wouldn?t be owned by HUD had they not gone through foreclosure. Therefore, they are important to calculate when looking at this type of market data.

Get Better Prices From Big Bathroom Shop ? Home Improvement

Why settle for poor quality bathroom products at high prices? You can use the internet to make savings of up to 60% on bathroom suites, shower units and a wide range of bathroom accessories.

This is clearly great news for those of us wanting to carry out bathroom improvements and it seems that more and more of us are considering making changes to this room of the house. Some property experts suggest that bathroom and kitchen improvements could have the greatest impact in terms of increasing the value of your home.

So why are such large discounts available online? How do internet specialists like Big Bathroom Shop manage to compete so successfully with their more traditional rivals?

One reason is that many internet companies have a real advantage when it comes to reduced overheads. Without having the need for premises in high profile locations and lots of sales staff, these companies can often really cut their costs.

Older, physical shops find it much harder to do this. That?s because they need to retain premises in popular places in order to continue attracting customers. The shop front, in the case of internet retailers, is their website rather than a glass-fronted building.

But there are other reasons why prices have been driven down too. The internet tends to bring more transparency, allowing consumers to quickly compare prices and to have their say on the products and levels of service that they receive.

This is surely a good thing. It means that internet stores have to be ready to respond to this increased consumer awareness. That means that they have to increase quality and service levels, while keeping prices to a minimum. If they don?t do so then they surely won?t survive.

Take advantage of your stronger buying position and shop online to save money on bathroom products and accessories.

My Stamped Concrete Driveway

When I drove up to the house this evening after work I realized that the there were just a few projects left before the house would look great. I figured I would tackle it in terms of costs: first the garage door, then painting everything and finally the driveway and landscaping. Little did I know that the cost of a concrete driveway was way less than I expected. Although in the end I decided to resurface the driveway last so I would not have to worry about my painting skills.

That weekend I went to the hardware store and bought a garage door. I thought about installing it myself, but once I realized that it would cost less than $100 I decided it would be worth it not to have to break my back. This also freed me up to look at painting options, pick up painting supplies and narrow down the colours. By the end of the weekend I had selected a color for the house and the trim. That left me time during the week to prep the garden beds, the windows and the gutters.

By the time I was off of work on Friday all I needed to do was pick up the paint for an early start on Saturday. I borrowed my neighbors compressor and it made painting the house a breeze. I was surprise at how quickly I was able to get the entire house painted. Within a week of taping off the house I had painted the house and all the trim. I was so impressed I called some concrete driveway contractors for some quotes.

Once I got a quote I was happy with I set up a consultation. Like the rest of my home improvement projects, my concrete driveway resurfacing was completed in less than a month. Not only do I have the only stamped concrete driveway in my neighborhood, I am the only one with matching garden edging.

SEC filings limited in proof of Romney CEO role

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When Bally Total Fitness filed a proxy statement with the federal government in April 2000 identifying its major investors, the list included Mitt Romney as "sole shareholder, sole director, president and chief executive officer" of Brookside Capital Investors Inc., a Bain Capital investment fund that effectively controlled 5 percent stock ownership in the national health club chain.

Romney was the undisputed owner of Brookside, a Bain management partnership. It had been used for years to oversee some of the private equity company's expanding investments and takeover deals, including a $1 billion acquisition of Domino's Pizza the same year. But other Bain partners also held voting power in the interlocking investment funds the company used, along with Brookside, to exercise its stock ownership.

That complicated business relationship is at the core of the presidential campaign dispute over whether dozens of reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission show Romney's continuing role as CEO in the three years after he left Bain Capital in February 1999 to head Salt Lake City's Winter Olympics. Romney was named at least 39 times in SEC filings as sole shareholder and chief executive of Bain funds used in corporate takeovers and other investment deals, according to an Associated Press review.

Former SEC officials and other legal authorities familiar with securities law say such filings were legal formalities that reflected Romney's ownership stakes, not his actual management of the shares. Romney could have kept his management role during that period, they said, but the SEC documents are useful in establishing his "beneficial ownership" ? the voting power over stock holdings that he shared with his Bain partners.

The SEC's beneficial ownership statements have been required corporate filings since 1968, when a congressional act enforced their use to ward off the threat of surprise takeovers of public companies. The 1968 Williams Act ordered that any individual or company buying up more than 5 percent of a public company's stock needed to file a 13-D beneficial ownership statement within 10 days of the transaction.

The filings are used by the SEC, companies and investors as an early warning system to show the sudden accumulation of large stock stakes, said Brian J. Lane, a partner at the Washington law firm of Gibson Dunn and former director of the SEC's Corporate Finance Division, which oversees corporate filings.

After media reports cited Romney's SEC filings last month in raising questions about his role at Bain Capital after leaving for the Olympics in 1999, Democratic Party officials questioned whether those documents were accurate. Stephanie Cutter, President Barack Obama's deputy campaign manager, said Romney was "either misrepresenting his own position at Bain to the SEC, which is a felony, or he was misrepresenting his position at Bain to the American people."

The Romney campaign objected to her comments. Cutter later said she was not accusing Romney of committing a crime, but she and other Democratic Party critics have continued to question his SEC filings.

Book: First-Line Sales Managers Key to Corporate Growth | US Daily ...

By Jeremy Morris, Associate Editor, US Daily Review.

If organizations across industries hope to drive profitable revenue growth in a changing business environment, they must dedicate time, attention and resources to develop and maintain a strong team of first-line sales managers (FLMs).

This is the fundamental message in a new book by sales force effectiveness experts Andris A. Zoltners, Prabhakant Sinha and Sally E. Lorimer, ?Building a Winning Sales Management Team: The Force Behind the Sales Force? (ZS Associates; July 2012; $29.95 Hardcover;?http://bit.ly/BAWSMT).

Zoltners, Sinha and Lorimer urge management to ask pointed questions: What are the skills required for being successful sales managers? How can we factor these into our manager selection criteria to avoid the error of simply selecting those who have succeeded as salespeople? What steps have we taken to guard against role pollution or instances where our managers end up doing the job of salespeople? Are we doing enough to support our sales managers and help them adapt to their evolving roles and a dynamic marketplace?

As the first book of its kind, ?Building a Winning Sales Management Team? offers pragmatic, actionable insights with real-world examples to guide organizations that wish to nurture successful sales managers and improve their company?s productivity. In developing the book, the authors worked closely with an advisory board of leaders from some of the world?s top organizations.

?A good first-line sales manager is worth 10 good salespeople, so a team of winning sales managers gives you an unbeatable competitive advantage,? said Neil Rackham, best-selling author of ?SPIN Selling? and professor of professional selling at the University of Cincinnati. ?Using practical examples, sound theory, and proven sales force wisdom, this book shows you how to develop that winning team.?

The new book continues a long lineage of pioneering thought around sales force effectiveness from sales and marketing experts at ZS Associates. Other books from the authors include: ?The Complete Guide to Accelerating Sales Force Performance,? ?Building a Winning Sales Force: Powerful Strategies for Driving High Performance,? ?The Complete Guide to Sales Force Incentive Compensation? and ?Sales Force Design for Strategic Advantage.?

Sales managers key to long-term success, profitability
Zoltners and Sinha, founders of global sales and marketing consulting firm ZS Associates, believe great managers profoundly influence sales force successes and failures. Their conviction has been reinforced over the years by directing and observing ZS consulting projects across dozens of industries and scores of countries.

?Leadership must carefully consider how the company hires, maintains and supports its first-line sales managers,? said Zoltners. ?This group is a critical driver of sales performance, but role pollution, for example, can result in sales managers doing the job of salespeople or, in some instances, spending more than 30 percent of their time on administrative tasks. Underinvesting in this group is another key mistake. We expect sales effectiveness initiatives directed at first-line sales managers to boost corporate revenue by 10 percent or more in the long term.?

Co-author Sinha agrees. ?Great sales managers either coach, counsel and motivate average salespeople or replace them with new talent until sales performance becomes excellent across the entire district or region. Sales managers today encounter challenges that range from more knowledgeable customers to a more substantial workload. Many companies, however, fail to equip their managers with the tools, training and support necessary to embrace, adapt and thrive in their changing roles as people managers, customer managers and business managers.?

Developing strong managers is also vital, the authors note, because even excellent sales managers struggle with change. Talented salespeople promoted to sales manager may find it difficult to direct former peers. More established managers may feel challenged to adjust to the Gen Y presence in the workplace. And any manager could be overwhelmed by the explosion of data or the risks of communicating in a social media-driven, interconnected business setting.

Guide to sales management success
?Building a Winning Sales Management Team? is divided into three sections to help companies establish and sustain a strong sales management team: 1) define the FLM job to help execute the sales force strategy; 2) create a team of FLMs with talents and competencies to drive success; and 3) enable and encourage the sales management team to perform the right activities for driving sales force success. It concludes with a self-assessment tool that companies can use to determine the right priorities to start improving their first-line sales manager success drivers.

GE Corporate Officer Mark Vachon attests to the practicality and validity of Zoltners, Sinha and Lorimer?s new book. ?We at GE have tested these principles and we?re believers. Ideas from this book helped us create growth and much improved customer connections.?

Controversial feature paints Steve Jobs as a ?Genius? and a jerk?

News

Wired magazine has featured Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on the cover in a controversial feature that explores the late CEO?s management style and its effect on tech leaders today, with the headline asking ?Do you really want to be like Steve Jobs?

The cover image depicts Jobs??dual and contradictory nature, with a halo and horns and taglines describing him as a ?Buddhist? and a tyrant? and a ?Genius? and a jerk?.

Reports claim that the feature entitled ?The Story of Steve Jobs: An Inspiration or a Cautionary Tale?? ?borrows heavily? from Walter Isaacson?s official biography of Steve Jobs released last year. Isaacson recently gave a lecture about his book in which he made it clear that anyone looking to copy the leader?s management style would be misguided if they thought it would make them as successful as Jobs.

?People have written about this book being a guide for managers. People tell me, ?I?m like Steve! I push people to perfection. But you don?t need to push people to be like Steve, you need know how to be a genius at creating things, not just driving people crazy,? Isaacson said.

In an article?published in the Harvard Business Review April Issue Isaacson summarises a set of leadership lessons he attributes to Jobs.? He wrote: ?In the months since my biography of Jobs came out, countless commentators have tried to draw management lessons from it. Some of those readers have been insightful, but I think that many of them (especially those with no experience in entrepreneurship) fixate too much on the rough edges of his personality.?

Below is an excerpt from the feature in Wired ? you can also read the full article here.

Join or get out of the way?it?s a phrase that sums up what Jobs? life has taught his admirers today. Andrew Hargadon, a professor at UC Davis and author of?How Breakthroughs Happen: The Surprising Truth About How Companies Innovate,?points out that Jobs? brashness has helped inspire a larger reaction to several decades of conventional wisdom about the importance of worker empowerment and consensus decision- making. ?Jobs is showing us the value in the old-school, autocratic way. We?ve gone so far toward the other extreme, toward a bovine sociology in which happy cows are supposed to produce more milk.? That is, it took a hippie-geek like Jobs to give other bosses permission to be aggressive and domineering again.

This isn?t aggression for its own sake but for the good of a company. Tristan O?Tierney, a Mac and iPhone software developer, helped Twitter creator Jack Dorsey found the credit-card-swiping startup Square three years ago. O?Tierney says that he now sees the value in bluntly telling people their work is crap. ?You don?t make better products by saying everything is great,? he explains. ?You make them better by forcing people to do work they didn?t know they had in them.? Aaron Levie, a self-described Jobs ?wantrepreneur,? started Box, which allows cloud-based file-sharing, in his USC dorm room in 2005. To new hires, he quotes Jobs??Some people aren?t used to an environment where excellence is expected??to make clear to them that Box is just such an environment. ?My lesson from Jobs,? Levie says, ?is that I can push my employees further than they thought possible, and I won?t rush any product out the door without it being perfect.? He adds: ?That approach comes with collateral damage on the people side.?

$132 million effort to build 'human on a chip'

Dominic Doyle, Frank Block / Vanderbilt

An artist's conception shows a microbrain reactor being developed at Vanderbilt University. The bioreactor is aimed at reproducing the brain's microenvironment in a device about the size of a grain of rice.

By Devin Coldewey

Many medications and treatments, even after years of research, fail in the final phase of review ? when they're actually tested in humans. Despite having performed well in the lab, in mice, and perhaps in closer human analogues like monkeys, drugs occasionally turn out to be ineffective or toxic when used by the humans they're meant to help. To improve this process, and limit the risks to human testers, the National Institutes of Health and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency are together pledging up to up to $132 million for creating "organ-on-a-chip" systems, with the eventual goal of simulating the entire human body.

The tissue-chip project is a natural outgrowth (so to speak) of existing lab testing on human tissue. Each of the projects being funded is aimed at isolating a small, living piece of a human being. It may be just a few cells, but those cells would grow and function as if they were in their native habitat, the human body. And surrounding those cells would be sensors for detecting microscopic changes in the test environment.

Each type of cell and organ must be approached differently: Brain cells exist in an environment vastly different from muscles or the liver. Consequently, the funding is spread over a number of institutions and programs, some of which are specializing in just one type of tissue or organ.

Vanderbilt University, for instance, will be receiving up to $2.1 million from the NIH's $70 million allocation, for the creation of what they call a "microbrain reactor." It would put human brain cells into an artificial environment that not only keeps them alive, but simulates the physiological barriers that protect the brain from contaminants in blood and other fluids. John Wikswo, who is leading Vanderbilt's effort, is enthusiastic about the research:

"Given the differences in cellular biology in the brains of rodents and humans, development of a brain model that contains neurons and all three barriers between blood, brain and cerebral spinal fluid, using entirely human cells, will represent a fundamental advance in and of itself."

Much more information on the project and its multidisciplinary lineup of researchers can be found in Vanderbilt's news release.

Other institutions are undertaking much larger efforts. Harvard University has received a similar amount from the NIH, but Harvard's Wyss Institute could also get more than 10 times as much ? up to $37 million ? from DARPA to develop a device that integrates as many as 10 organs on a chip. It would be a closer and more complete representation of the human body than has ever been created ? a veritable homunculus that could open the way to cheaper, quicker and safer drug testing. It would also reduce the number and variety of animals used in testing, and enable widespread, standardized techniques requiring less training.

This video of experts explaining the Wyss Institute's lung on a chip gives a more specific idea of the context and purpose of this technology:

Researchers at Harvard's Wyss Institute explain how "organs on a chip" can improve drug testing.

Another double-barreled dose of funding is heading toward the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: MIT and the Draper Laboratory, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, are set to receive up to $6.25 million from NIH to model cancer thereapies using engineered human tissue constructs. Up to $26.3 million more will be provided under an agreement with DARPA to create an "organ-on-a-chip" platform, through a new program called BIO-MIMETICS. (That's not only a word in itself, but also a mouthful of an acronym standing for "Barrier-Immune-Organ: Microphysiology, Microenvironment Engineered Construct Systems.")

If everything goes as planned, the MIT-led work with human tissue would be adapted for the BIO-MIMETICS platform. MIT's news release provides more details.

The NIH, DARPA, and the Food and Drug Administration are working in concert, but their funding is separate. (The description of DARPA's proposal is here). In addition to the grants given to Vanderbilt, Harvard and MIT, the NIH has awarded funding to 14 other projects, adding up to a potential total of $70 million over five years.

The FDA isn't kicking in any money for the researchers right now, but the fact sheet for the initiative says the FDA "will help explore how this new technology might be used to assess drug safety prior to approval for first-in-human studies."

You'll find more details about all 17 projects via the NIH's webpage on the Tissue Chip Project Awards. Here's a brief rundown on the projects and their principal researchers.

Ten awards are aimed at investigating or creating systems by which organs are simulated on an extremely small scale. The terminology differs but they are largely working in the same sphere. We've already touched on the funding going to Vanderbilt, Harvard and MIT. Here are the other seven projects:

  • Microphysiological systems and low-cost microfluidic platform with analytics (Cornell University - Michael Shuler and James Hickman)
  • Circulatory system and integrated muscle tissue for drug and tissue toxicity (Duke University - George Truskey)
  • Human induced pluripotent stem cell and embryonic stem cell-based models for predictive neural toxicity and teratogenicity (University of Wisconsin, Madison - James Thomson)
  • Disease-specific integrated microphysiological human tissue models (UC Berkeley - Kevin Healy and Luke Lee)
  • An integrated in vitro model of perfused tumor and cardiac tissue (UC Irvine - Steven George)
  • A 3-D biomimetic liver sinusoid construct for predicting physiology and toxicity (University of Pittsburgh - D. Lansing Taylor and Martin Yarmush)
  • A tissue-engineered human kidney microphysiological system (University of Washington - Jonathan Himmelfarb)

Seven awards are for exploring stem/progenitor cells as sources for the tissues to be used in such microsystems:

  • Generating human intestinal organoids with an enteric nervous system (Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center - James Wells)
  • Modeling complex disease using induced pluripotent stem cell-derived skin constructs (Columbia University Health Sciences - Angela Christiano)
  • Human intestinal organoids: Pre-clinical models of non-inflammatory diarrhea (Johns Hopkins University - Mark Donowitz)
  • A 3-D model of human brain development for studying gene/environment interactions (Johns Hopkins University - Thomas Hartung)
  • Modeling oxidative stress and DNA damage using a gastrointestinal organotypic culture system (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia - John Lynch)
  • Three-dimensional osteochondral micro-tissue to model pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (University of Pittsburgh - Rocky Tuan)
  • Three-dimensional human lung model to study lung disease and formation of fibrosis (University of Texas - Joan Nichols)

Sega Mega Drive Icons ToeJam & Earl Funking Onto Modern ...

Sega-Mega-Drive-Icons-ToeJam-And-Earl-Funking-Onto-Modern-Consoles-SoonToeJam & Earl is very much the marmite of Retro Gaming, you either love their 16-bit funkadelic antics or remain confused as to what the two decades of fuss has been about. Either way you'll soon be able to rekindle your love-hate relationship with the dynamic duo as they are set to jam their way onto modern consoles shortly.

The series has very much remained dormant since their second outing, ToeJam & Earl Panic on Funkotron, on the Sega Mega Drive in 1993. While the radical double did make a third appearance in 2002 on the Microsoft Xbox, most retro gamers tend to ignore this fabled release which failed to capture the charm of the pixelated past.

Similar to the recent Golden Axe and Streets of Rage revivals, the two ToeJam and Earl games are to be packaged up and distributed as downloadable games for Sega's ongoing Vintage Collection. Whilst no release date has been set, don't be too alarmed if your console's marketplace is suddenly hit with this radical addition.

Gooch hopeful England can save First Test as South Africa dominate

But whatever the outcome of the first Investec Test, Gooch will be happy to congratulate South Africa's Hashim Amla on joining him as one of only six men to make a Test triple-century in this country.

Amla's tour de force 311 not out featured in stands of 259 with his captain Graeme Smith and then an unbroken 377 with Jacques Kallis (182no) in the tourists' monumental 637 for two declared.

After England had then wobbled to 102 for four, still 150 short of making South Africa bat again, the hosts were up against it on the final day to avoid going 1-0 down with two to play.

Should they fail, their world number one status will be in jeopardy.

Gooch was last night clinging to the belief they could, but made it clear too Amla deserves the plaudits for his outstanding innings.

"I thought it was a wonderful effort," he said. "To score runs you need a great attitude, a good technique, good knowledge and above all spot-on concentration.

"I think he showed all four things.

"He's developed his game over the years since he made his debut. He's got a good range of shot, and a great temperament.

"He needs to be congratulated - a fantastic effort from a very good player."

England will not need a triple-century to rescue a draw, but a hundred would be handy.

Their best hopes rest with not-out batsmen Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara, the latter one of Gooch's Essex proteges.

"It's a different sort of opportunity, but one you face a lot in Test cricket," he said of the challenge facing England.

"Sometimes you go in, where you're trying to set the tone, set up a game.

"This is a rearguard action, backs to the wall; you have to show your character; you have to show your quality with technique.

"It will be a test for both the guys in the middle and the other guys down the order. Each ball is the only ball that matters."

If England do not pull it off, it will be tough to recover over the next month - although a drawn series will be enough for them to stay at the top of the International Cricket Council table.

"If you go 1-0 down in a three-match series you are up against it, but you can still get back into the series," said Gooch.

"If you play well you have a chance, and England have quality to win matches. That's a given."

Amla, meanwhile, was last night confident - but far from arrogant - about South Africa's prospects of victory.

"I think you would rather be in our changing room, without a doubt," he said.

"Our bowlers have bowled really well to ruffle the feathers of the English team.

"They got the ball to talk a bit. I hope we can do some good things tomorrow."

From the Editor's Desk: Bad timing for Batman, Nexus 7 shipping (or not), and other odds and ends

Phil Nickinson

Hey there, everybody! Took a week off from this column last week, as my fingers (and the rest of my body) could hardly move after installing some hardwood floors. Don't let those TV shows fool you -- that stuff is hard. On the plus side, I've decided to wear kneepads 24/7, which should do wonders for those broken joints of mine, previously abused by too many years (and one ACL replacement) on the soccer field, and currently by a few too many inches on the ol' waistline. Don't knock it till you try it.

A few thoughts as we head back into another work week:

  • As I said atop our news post last week announcing the release of Gameloft's The Dark Night, we're all painfully aware of the shooting in Aurora, Colo., just outside Denver. It's a nice little suburb I've been to a number of times, when my maternal grandmother was alive. My question: Should Gameloft have postponed the release? There are arguments on either side of that, certainly.
  • Oh, and you'd be amazed at how quickly I can (and have, and will again) ban people who think they're leaving funny comments in regards to a dozen people getting shot.
  • So the 16-gigabyte Nexus 7 tablet is back to "Coming soon" status on Google Play. Obviously, something weird happened with fulfillment. For my part, I got the one I ordered on July 3 (though the Nexus Q I ordered with it isn't shipping yet). What's odd is that the two 16GB Nexus 7s I ordered on June 27 -- during the Google I/O keynote, actually, as soon as they hit the store -- are still in limbo. The UPS label has been printed, but that's it. For what it's worth, this is the first time I've ever had an issue ordering a device from Google Play. Countless Galaxy Nexus phones have made it without issue. Is it a Google thing? An ASUS thing? Is the Nexus 7 just that popular?
  • I picked up the Kindle Fire this weekend for the first time since getting the Nexus 7 -- only so I could watch "The West Wing." Amazon created a nice little niche for itself with the Kindle Fire and streaming video, but it's time for the company to open things up onto non-Kindle devices. And a releasing a better Kindle Fire (which we fully expect to happen later this year) isn't the answer. Want to put a hurt on Netflix? Get on the iPad. And on Android tablets. And push hard on all the new Windows gear.
  • Some great thoughts from Rene Ritchie on the Nexus 7. The whole "save state" thing doesn't bother me nearly as much as it does him, though, but that could that while I frequently use an iPad, I don't use it as thoroughly and completely as he does. (Or maybe it's just difference in the way we think.)

So what's coming next? Samsung's doing something on Aug. 15. (Good lord, it's almost August already?) We'll be at the IFA conference in Berlin in late August/early September, so there's that, too. And we're already looking ahead to the CTIA conference in San Diego in October.

This week I'll be meeting up with the other Mobile Nations editors in Winnipeg, which I'm told is in Canada. (Hey, I just get on the plane ya know?) Exciting things are afoot, and those of you who frequent CrackBerry might have seen the Mobile Nations Passport teaser. This is good stuff, folks.

Cattle herds dwindle in drought

With ranchers struggling, this summer's count of US cattle saw the lowest numbers since 1973.

A widespread drought that's forcing American ranchers to sell off animals has helped shrink the?US cattle?herd to its smallest number in at least four decades.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Friday that the number of?cattle?and calves in the United States totaled 97.8 million head as of July 1. That's 2 percent less than a year ago. Beef?cattle?numbers were down 3 percent at 30.5 million head counted, while dairy cow numbers remained unchanged at 9.2 million.

Overall, it's the smallest?cattle?inventory since the agency began a July count in 1973.

Glynn Tonser, an associate professor in agricultural economics at Kansas State University, said the smaller?cattle?numbers reflect a years-long trend that was speeded up by last year's drought in the Southwest. Pastures dried up, and feed prices skyrocketed, forcing ranchers to sell off animals.

There are two signs the?cattle?numbers won't recover soon. The nation's 2012 calf crop also was 2 percent smaller compared to a year ago, with 34.5 million calves expected to be born this year, the report estimated.

Colo. shooting suspect used Internet for arsenal

DENVER (AP) ? In a world where Amazon can track your next book purchase and you must register to buy allergy medicine, James Holmes spent months stockpiling thousands of bullets and head-to-toe ballistic gear without raising any red flags with authorities.

The suspect in the mass theater shooting availed himself of an unregulated online marketplace that allows consumers to acquire some of the tools of modern warfare as if they were pieces of a new wardrobe. The Internet is awash in sites ranging from BulkAmmo.com, which this weekend listed a sale on a thousand rifle rounds for $335, to eBay, where bidding on one armored special forces helmet has risen to $799.

"We're different than other cultures," said Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, which advocates for firearms owners' rights. "We do allow Americans to possess the accoutrements that our military generally has."

Gun rights activists like Brown celebrate that freedom, but even some involved in the trade are troubled by how easily Holmes stocked up for his alleged rampage.

Chad Weinman runs TacticalGear.com, which caters to police officers looking to augment their equipment, members of the military who don't want to wait on permission from the bureaucracy for new combat gear, and hobbyists like survivalists and paintballers. The site receives "thousands" of orders daily, sometimes from entire platoons that are about to deploy to war zones.

On July 2, Holmes placed a $306 order with the site for a combat vest, magazine holders and a knife, paying extra for expedited two-day shipping to his Aurora apartment. The order, Weinman said, didn't stand out.

"There's a whole range of consumers who have an appetite for these products, and 99.9 percent of them are law-abiding citizens," Weinman said. But he said that "it makes me sick" that Holmes bought material from him. He added that he doesn't sell guns or ammunition and that he was "shocked" at the amount of bullets that Holmes allegedly bought online.

Authorities say all of Holmes' purchases were legal -- and there is no official system to track whether people are stockpiling vast amounts of firepower.

There is no restriction on the sale of bullets in the United States, except for armor-piercing rounds, which can only be bought by law enforcement, said Ginger Colbrun, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Hence the proliferation of websites offering Amazon.com-style wish-lists for hollow-point rifle rounds or tracer bullets.

There is a federal law that bars selling body armor to violent felons -- which Holmes was not -- but it is rarely used because there are is no requirement to check whether purchasers of the material have criminal records, according to Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence.

Over four months, authorities said, Holmes received more than 50 packages at his Aurora apartment and the University of Colorado medical school, where he was studying neuroscience. As the boxes piled up, he began to shop for guns at sporting goods stores -- because of the need to pass a background check to buy a firearm, they are still generally bought at brick-and-mortar locations.

On May 22, law enforcement officials said Holmes bought a Glock pistol. Less than a week later, he upgraded to a shotgun. The following week he bought an AR-15 rifle, versions of which had been outlawed under the assault weapon ban in 1994. But that prohibition expired in 2004 and Congress, in a nod to the political clout of gun enthusiasts, did not renew it.

Holmes also acquired explosive materials and equipment to rig his entire apartment with a complex series of booby traps that took authorities days to dismantle. Officials have not said how he obtained the material for the devices.

Holmes capped off his gun purchases with another pistol on July 7. Authorities say that, 12 days later, Holmes bought a ticket to the midnight premiere of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" and entered the theater with the crowd, then slipped out the side door and returned dressed for battle.

Oates said the shooter wore a ballistic helmet, gas mask, throat-protector, tactical vest and pants -- such complete protective gear that responding officers almost mistook him for a member of the SWAT team. He lobbed gas canisters at the crowd, then opened fire. By the time police arrived, 90 seconds later, Holmes had shot dozens of people because his rifle was modified with a high-powered drum magazine that allowed him to fire immense amounts of bullets without reloading. "It was a pretty rapid pace of fire in that theater," Oates said.

The high-capacity magazine had also been prohibited under the assault weapon ban, and even though the federal law expired a few states outlaw the devices. Colorado, which has relatively permissive gun laws, does not.

Colorado State Senator John Morse, a Democrat, said he wished the state barred large-capacity magazines and guns like the AR-15, but he does not expect the attack to make that likely. "The NRA has managed to convince the country that this has to happen to protect our Second Amendment rights," Morse said. "As long as we let people buy these guns, we will bury our children."

Rep Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), whose husband was killed in a mass shooting on the Long Island Railroad in 1993, has proposed a ban on high-capacity magazines in Congress but acknowledges it has little chance of passage. She said she was horrified by the shooting but most shocked by the other material that Holmes allegedly accumulated -- the bullets and combat gear.

"It befuddles me to think those things should be sold to the general public," she said.

Colorado State Rep. Mike Waller cautioned against trying to limit purchases of ammunition. He noted that Holmes reportedly bought 300 rounds for his shotgun. "My 13-year-old son and I go out to the shooting range all the time," said Waller, a Republican. "I buy more than 300 rounds of shotgun shells when I do that."

He said there may be discussion of limiting the sale of the sort of protective clothing that Holmes allegedly donned. "Is that what the right to bear arms means, that you can purchase tactical gear to stop law enforcement from preventing you from perpetrating a crime?" Waller asked. "In the days and weeks to come, this is going to be a significant conversation."

But gun enthusiasts caution against over-reacting to the massacre. Brown, of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, said he thinks citizen's access to weaponry has made the United States "a stronger country." And he doesn't see anything unusual about many of Holmes' alleged purchases.

"If I only had 6,000 rounds for my AR-15s, I'd literally feel naked," Brown said. Then he totaled up Holmes' firearms purchases: "Two handguns, a shotgun and a rifle. That's the average male in Colorado."

Online Reputation Management: Reputation Highly Affects Business

Jul 23

There are many websites today. Having competitors is inevitable. In fact, you are not only competing on customers when you do business online. You will also compete with web traffic. One may not also avoid competitors who will take the rivalry to the next level even if it means damaging your reputation. If you are a victim of false allegations or have sent a wrong message to the consumers, a reputation management service may be able to help you.

I have availed this service before and I must say that it worked for I now have brought back some consumers? trust. The company that I hired for reputation management is the same company that takes care of my website?s on-site and search engine optimization needs.

I contacted the company to inquire about the cost of reputation management and the price they gave after analyzing my problem is very reasonable. Note that you can send an email or fill in the contact form on their website. You can also use live chat if you want faster response.

The company has an effective strategy. The results are quick. The company is also fast to start the service. It is great for immediate solutions for reputation problems. Their technique involves pushing down the negative feedbacks or false allegations down the search results. It also helps your brand more known.

I definitely recommend this company to everyone who needs help in managing their online reputation and brand. It is very helpful to businessmen whose primary problem is the lack of trust from consumers.

Sad Sales Negotiators Do a Bad Job

In the quest to do a better job at negotiating deals, sales negotiators have been known to do some pretty wild things in order to condition themselves to perform at a high level - extreme exercising, exposure to hot / cold temperatures, and even eating some pretty weird things. However, is it possible that they've been overlooking the most important thing - how happy they are?

The Power Of Sad

Dr. Robert Cialdini has spent a lot of time studying how we can persuade others and how they can persuade us. In fact he's written a popular book on the topic titled Influence: Science and Practice in which he talks about what causes us to do things that we may not be giving a lot of thought to.

When it comes to sales negotiations, Dr. Cialdini and his peers have done some interesting studies that should cause all of us to sit up and take notice.

The Big Guess

The social scientist who were doing the research started with the hypothesis that when we get sad, we get motivated to do something to change our current circumstances in order to get out of our sad mood.

They took this thinking one step further. They also guessed that sad buyers would be willing to pay higher prices for a given product and sad sellers would be willing to sell a product for a lower price.Ã'Â Do I have your interest now?

The Experiment

The cool thing about being a social scientist is that you get to test your hypothesis on people, not rats. In this case the scientists had their (human) test subjects divided into two groups. One group watched a sad movie and then wrote a paragraph about how the movie made them feel. The other group watched a movie about fish (!) and then wrote about what they had done that day.

Next, both groups were once again divided into two groups and one group was asked to mark on a piece of paper what price they would sell an item at and the other group was asked to mark on a piece of paper what price they would buy an item at.

What the scientist discovered just might scare you. It turns out that their original guess was right: sad buyer ended up being willing to spend 30% more for an item than emotionally neutral buyers. Likewise, sad sellers were willing to sell an item for 33% less than emotionally neutral sellers. The really spooky part of all of this is that the sad buyers and sellers had no idea that their sadness had affected them so much.

Final Thoughts

Although we often get caught up in preparing for our next sales negotiation, what the social scientists have discovered is that we bring everything else that is going on in our lives to the table with us. On a similar note, the other side of the negotiating table does the exact same thing.

Before you start your next sales negotiation, you need to take a minute or two and evaluate how you are feeling. If there is anything that is bringing you down or making you depressed, then you have got to try to find a way to resolve it or at least make it better before the negotiations start. Learn to do this and it will allow you to close better deals and close them quicker.
