U to reconsider recreational bike and skateboard ban | The Daily ...

by: Topher Webb on May 14, 2013

The U is set to review the language of a controversial proposed ban on recreational bicycle and skateboard riding on campus next month.

The policy, passed by the Academic Senate on May 6, would prohibit recreational use of bicycles, skateboards or any other non-motorized vehicles not related to university activities. The Senate vote was tie decided by Senate president Robert Fujihami, said Allyson Mower, the Senate president-elect.

The Academic Senate Executive Committee will discuss the language of the policy at its meeting on June 17. Originally the Board of Trustees was going to hear the bill at its meeting on May 14, leaving the senate to review the policy in the fall. The policy will not take effect until passed by the Board of Trustees.

?The Senate had basically voted to approve it as-is with the caveat that not everyone agreed with the use of the wording ?strictly prohibited,?? Mower said. ?That wording is what the Senate wanted to be revisited in the fall. I think that wording along with the definition of recreation and commuting.?

Communications director Keith Sterling said the U administration in conjunction with the Senate made the decision to review the policy earlier.

?They?re going to take a close look at this language and I imagine refine it a litte bit because members of the Academic Senate had expressed publicly some concern about the severity of the language,? Sterling said.

As of May 10, Mower had not seen or heard any proposed changes.

The idea to revise the policy came from complaints about bikes and skateboards on campus.

?Their rational for revising the policy initially was because of the significant increase in the use of bikes and skateboards and other non-motorized devices on campus and then because of some safety issues and some damage that had happened to university property,? Mower said.

The policy would only apply to students, faculty or others associated with the U. Visitors on campus fall under a state administrative rule similar to the U policy currently in place.

U Police chief Scott Folsom said U Police receives many complaints about skateboarders.

?What he have is a continuing problem with skateboarders who behaving in ways that are generating a lot of complaints some of it is rude behavior quite often it is safety behavior they?re not yielding to people, having close calls or actually colliding with people,? Folsom said. ?I?d say that the great preponderance of the calls we get are about skateboarders as opposed to bicyclists, but we do get occasional complaints about bicyclists flying down campus, of cutting somebody off or coming so close as to frighten people when they go by.?

Folsom said the current policy is not sufficient.

?I?ve personally talked to skateboarders who say [the penalty is] not very much and if you get a ticket it?s just the price of being able to skateboard. It doesn?t appear to be of enough consequence to make people change their behavior,? Folsom said.

U Police does not issue many skateboarding citations. Folsom said riders are often gone before officers arrive.

?If you?re just out walking around campus, you step out of a building and you?re confronted by a skateboader or who hits you or knocks you down or something by the time you get to a phone, call us they?re hundreds of yards or blocks away,? Folsom said. ?We catch folks from time to time, but most of the time they?ve left the area by the time we get there. so we don?t issue a whole lot of citations but a few.?

Alma Allred, director of commuter services said a new policy is needed to ?safeguard the public.?

Allred said he rides a bicycle around campus and often has to avoid skateboarders. He said one reason the U needs a policy is people riding and walking who wear headphones and are oblivious to their surroundings.

?If everyone had been using their head there would be no need to [have a policy],?Allred said.

LinkedIn's disappointing outlook eclipses big 1Q

(AP) ? LinkedIn's rapidly rising stock got demoted late Thursday after the online professional networking service released a forecast calling for its earnings growth to slow later this year as the company hires more workers, invests in data centers and tweaks the way that it shows online ads.

The predicted deceleration overshadowed another stellar performance during the first three months of the year. As has been the case in every reporting period since LinkedIn Corp. went public two years ago, both the company's first-quarter earnings and revenue topped the analyst estimates that steer Wall Street expectations.

But management's projections for both the current quarter ending in June and the full year came in below analyst projections, rattling investors who have become accustomed to LinkedIn delivering nothing but pleasant surprises.

The letdown dampened the feverish interest in LinkedIn's stock, which surpassed $200 for the first time Thursday. After closing at $201.67, LinkedIn's shares tumbled $20.45, or more than 10 percent, to $181.22 in extended trading.

Even if the sell-off carries through into Friday's regular trading session, LinkedIn's stock still will have more than quadrupled from its initial public offering price of $45. As of Thursday's close, the shares had surged by 76 percent so far this year compared to a 12 percent gain for the Standard & Poor's 500 index.

LinkedIn has thrived by establishing itself as the go-to place for employers to find talented workers and for people to get job tips and other advice to manage their careers. It doesn't cost anything for people to set up a professional profile on the site. The Mountain View, Calif., company makes most of its money by charging employers and headhunters for analytical tools and additional access to LinkedIn profiles and the site, such as the ability to send messages to users.

The service now has 225 million members, up from 202 million members at the end of last year.

LinkedIn is now adding more content, giving its audience more reasons to return to its website more frequently and to stay for longer periods. The company hopes that will lead to more advertising to supplement its revenue. As part of that process, LinkedIn plans to place more ads within the stream of the personal updates appearing in the middle of its members' individual pages rather displaying them on the sides.

The switch is a strategy already used by social networking leader Facebook Inc. and online messaging service Twitter to make it easier to show ads on mobile devices. LinkedIn plans to make the transition gradually to minimize the chances of irritating its members, CEO Jeff Weiner told analysts during a Thursday conference call.

LinkedIn's profits also will be lowered by the expenses for expanding the company's payroll and building data centers to run its online services.

"There are some incremental investments coming into play," Steve Sordello, LinkedIn's chief financial officer, told analysts during the conference call.

LinkedIn earned $22.6 million, or 20 cents per share, in the first quarter. That's up from $5 million, or 4 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were 45 cents per share in the latest quarter, well above analysts' expectations of 30 cents, based on a poll by FactSet.

Revenue grew 72 percent from last year to nearly $325 million ? about $7 million above analyst projections.

Analysts, though, are likely to revise their estimates for the rest of the year.

LinkedIn expects second-quarter revenue between $342 million and $347 million for the April-June period. Analysts had forecast $360 million.

For the full year, LinkedIn believes its revenue will range from $1.43 billion to $1.46 billion. That's $20 million more than the company had predicted a few months ago, but analysts have been counting on full-year revenue of $1.5 billion.

Another figure that troubled investors is LinkedIn's forecast for its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA. This measure provides an inkling of how much money the company is likely to make. LinkedIn expects full-year EBITDA of $330 million to $345 million for the full year, below analysts' expectations of $363 million.

Celtics stay alive, beat Knicks to force Game 6

NEW YORK (AP) ? The 11-0 deficit in Game 5 was wiped away. The 3-0 deficit in the series might be next.

The Boston Celtics are two victories from NBA history, and from extending the Knicks' postseason futility in a most improbable manner.

Kevin Garnett had 16 points and 18 rebounds and the Celtics stayed alive in the playoffs, cutting New York's lead to 3-2 with a 92-86 victory Wednesday night.

The Celtics will host Game 6 on Friday night, needing two wins to become the first NBA team to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a series.

"Our mentality has been like a Game 7 mentality. It's an all-out mentality. One that is no tomorrow. Period. Point blank," Garnett said. "We put ourselves in this 3-0 position and now we're just trying to fight our way out of it."

Brandon Bass added 17 points, steadying Boston as it shook off an 11-0 deficit and pulled away in the second half to stop the Knicks again from achieving their first playoff series victory since 2000.

"That shows you how resilient we are. Down 11-0, it could have been easy to say, 'All right fellas, hey, we made a great effort but it just wasn't good enough,'" reserve Jason Terry said. "We know we're just starting to jell as a team and injuries have plagued us all season long, but in this series it's all about heart, who is willing to go out there every night, every possession and leave it all out there. If that's not good enough, then we'll be going home."

J.R. Smith, back from his one-game suspension for elbowing Terry with the Knicks way ahead late in Game 3, missed his first 10 shots and finished 3 of 14 for 14 points.

Jeff Green scored 18 points and Paul Pierce had 16 as he and Garnett, the two franchise stalwarts, extended this season ? and perhaps their Celtics careers ? at least one more game.

"Obviously being down 2-0 or 3-0 or whatever it was, we could have folded shop. Nobody in here is going to quit," said Terry, who scored 17.

Carmelo Anthony scored 22 points but was just 8 of 24 in another dismal shooting night for the Knicks, who blew a big lead in this game and now the series. They face an unwanted trip back to Boston instead of the rest this aging roster could surely use before the second round.

If they get there.

"I think we're fine," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "Sure we would've loved to close it out and move on, but nobody said it would be easy."

The Knicks would host Game 7 on Sunday.

"I told you from Game 1 that this wasn't going to be a breeze, it wasn't going to be a walk in the park, them guys were going to fight and they're showing some fight right now," Anthony said. "They threw a couple punches at us now and it's time for us to do the same."

The Celtics were the first of the eight NBA teams that have come from 3-1 down, beating Philadelphia in 1968, and put themselves on the short list of teams that have erased a 2-0 deficit the next year in the NBA Finals.

So perhaps it would be fitting if they were the first to overcome 3-0.

"I think so. I mean, I think that would be wonderful, and someone's going to do it and I want it to be us, obviously, since that's the situation we're in," Boston coach Doc Rivers said before the game. "Someone will do it, and I really want to be a part of that."

He's still got a chance.

The Knicks limited the Celtics to 75 points per game while winning the first three, and nearly came back to win Game 4 on Sunday even without Smith. So they felt good even after missing their first chance to wrap it up, when Anthony was 10 of 35 in an overtime loss.

Point guard Raymond Felton said the Knicks still feel in control of the series "for sure."

"I mean, this is what playoff basketball is about. Yes, we wish we could have swept them, yes we wish we could have won that game tonight. Sometimes things don't happen that way," he added. "Things aren't always pretty, things aren't always the way you want them to be. We've just got to grind it out and go get a win."

Though few of these players were here for the streak, the Knicks were perhaps a bit overconfident heading into the game for a franchise that lost an NBA-record 13 straight postseason games from 2001-12.

Smith said Tuesday he'd have been playing golf instead of practicing had he played in Game 4, and players wore black to the game Wednesday as if they were heading to the Celtics' "funeral."

The Celtics didn't like it, with reserve Jordan Crawford exchanging words with Anthony and Raymond Felton after the final buzzer.

Forget the funeral. The Celtics are still very much alive.

"Well, we was going to a funeral, but it looks like we got buried," Smith said. "Basketball is a very humbling game."

Smith finally made a 3-pointer to end his drought, and then another cut what had been a 15-point Boston lead to 88-83 with 1:05 remaining. But Garnett made a jumper, then knocked down two free throws to clinch it.

The Knicks were just 5 of 22 from 3-point range, which looked worse until Smith hit three late.

The Sixth Man of the Year received a loud ovation when he went to check in during the first quarter, but heard a few boos by the third. They will likely be deafening on Friday, the kind usually reserved in Boston for a Lakers player.

By the time Anthony drove right into the middle of the lane for a dunk that made it 11-0, the Celtics already had three turnovers. But Bass made a pair of free throws and then a dunk to settle them down. He added five more points in the period as Boston climbed within 22-20 even though Pierce missed all six shots in a scoreless 12 minutes.

He made a 3-pointer shortly after returning from a break in the second, and another gave the Celtics their first lead at 34-33 with 5:46 remaining in the half. Then Garnett had two baskets in an 8-0 run that gave Boston a 42-37 advantage, and the Celtics walked off at halftime to mostly stunned silence within Madison Square Garden with a 45-39 lead.

The second halves had belonged to the Knicks in the series, but the Celtics remained steady in the third quarter, opening a 69-60 lead on Terry's 3-pointer with 41 seconds left, and pushed it to 75-60 early in the fourth.

NOTES: Woodson said the team will try to get Amare Stoudemire some contact in practice to see if he will be ready to play in the next round. Woodson said Stoudemire, who is recovering from right knee surgery, is "looking pretty good right now." ... Jason Kidd was honored before the game after winning the NBA's Sportsmanship Award on Tuesday. He is the first player to win it in back-to-back years and joins Grant Hill as the only player to win it multiple times.

What's behind best April for Detroit's Big 3 since 2007?

Detroit's Big 3 posted robust gains, led by Ford's popular F-Series pickup brand, GM's Silverado and Sierra cargo trucks, and Chrysler's Ram pickups. Moreover, with incentives down, profits are up.

General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler all posted double-digit sales increases compared with the same month last year. Ford posted the greatest sales gain, 18 percent, largely crediting the sales of its popular F-Series pickup brand, which increased 24 percent in April, selling more than 59,000 units.

The F-Series pickup has been the best-selling vehicle in the US for 31 years.

GM and Chrysler posted sales increases of about 11 percent each. GM reported a 28 percent gain of its Silverado brand, while its Sierra truck brand jumped 12.8 percent. Sales of Chrysler?s Ram pickup truck increased 49 percent from last April, helping make it the best April for the company since 2007. The

Trucks are typically sold at higher price points than cars; profits this season are also coming from an overall decline in incentives, which means that companies are turning a higher profit. Total industry incentives dropped 3 percent in April from the previous month; Ford and GM spent less on incentives, 7 and 4 percent respectively, while Chrysler incentive spending increased 3 percent.

?What people are actually paying for trucks is actually higher than last month. More people that need to buy trucks are buying trucks and they are not buying on discount,? says Jessica Caldwell, a senior analyst with Edmunds.com. ?The fact that prices are not only holding, but getting a little higher on trucks is good news for the domestic car companies because it helps with their profits.

Overall, total light vehicle sale totals are expected at 1.28 million in April, a 9 percent increase from the same month last year, but down 11.5 percent from March. Analysts say they expect year-end sales to end up between 15 and 15.5 million units.

Ms. Caldwell explains that April is considered a ?weird? month in the automotive industry because it is sandwiched between March, usually considered a robust sales month as it kicks off spring, and May, which benefits from the Memorial Day holiday and the start of summer ? factors that generally drive people to car showrooms.

A convergence of factors is helping drive sales early this year: Improved consumer confidence, which rose to 68.1 from 61.0 in March, rising home prices, continued pent-up demand from last year, and low financing rates.

?These wealth effects have spurred consumer spending this year, including on car sales,? says Lacey Plache, chief economist for Edmunds.com. ?Even as tough fiscal issues at home and abroad continue to crop up, consumers have not been derailed.

Leading foreign automaker Toyota reported sales fell 1.1 percent in April compared with the same month last year. Bill Fay, Toyota?s group vice president and general manager, released a statement saying that ?continued retail sales growth indicates the underlying strength of the market, which is a great sign for the month ahead.

Honda sales increased 7.4 percent, largely due to its CR-V utility vehicle, which hit an all-time April sales record. Hyundai sales increased 2 percent. Nissan Motor Co. reported the largest sales increase for a foreign automaker at 23 percent.

Volkswagen tallied the largest decline for any automaker in April. The company?s 10 percent decrease in sales compared with the same month last year is partially blamed on the fact the company does not have a large truck brand in its portfolio, plus its Passat brand has failed to remain competitive with best-selling midsize brands, the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry. The April decline broke the Volkswagen?s 31-month string of year-over-year growth.

?While it was a challenging month, particularly in the compact and midsize sedan segments, we remain solidly focused on our long-term growth strategy,? said Volkswagen Group of America CEO Jonathan Browning.

NRA to meet in Texas after blocking gun control in Congress

By Corrie MacLaggan

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of National Rifle Association members gather in Houston this weekend for the first time since the Senate rejected a plan last month to expand background checks for gun buyers, but officials say attendees will not sit back to celebrate victory.

"We view it as an opening battle in what will be a multi-year war," said Andrew Arulanandam, a spokesman for the NRA, which lobbied against the proposal. "We're definitely not resting on our laurels."

Polls show more than 80 percent of Americans support expanded background checks, but the proposal to extend background checks for sales made online and at gun shows fell six votes shy on April 17 of the 60 votes needed to clear a procedural hurdle in the Senate.

The proposal, which supporters have vowed to revive, is a key part of President Barack Obama's gun-control effort sparked by the school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

The vote was a sign of the influence of the gun lobby, particularly the NRA, which spent $18.6 million in the 2012 campaign cycle, according to the Sunlight Foundation. The NRA has more than 4 million members.

The NRA gathering in the nation's fourth-largest city, which starts Friday and continues through Sunday, is billed as a celebration of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution setting out the right to bear arms.

The event is expected to draw some 70,000 attendees who can stroll 400,000 square feet of displays to see the latest products from firearm manufacturers and hunting outfitters, check out wildlife art and shooting accessories, or sign up for hunting trips around the world. It will also draw protesters who plan to demonstrate for more gun-control measures such as background checks.

There will also be a Stand and Fight Rally with political commentator Glenn Beck, a country music jam featuring the Eli Young Band, and remarks from leading gun rights advocates including former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, Texas Governor Rick Perry and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.

Since last year's NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in St. Louis, Missouri, a national debate about gun laws sprang up after the December shooting at Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 children and six adults were killed. In the months that followed, states including Connecticut, Colorado, Maryland and New York have passed gun-control laws, while states such as Arkansas, Wyoming and South Dakota have loosened gun restrictions.

"Almost from the moment of the tragedy in Newtown, it became apparent that the ensuing push for a wide variety of new anti-gun laws had a lot less to do with school safety than it did with a decades-long crusade to destroy the Second Amendment," NRA chief executive officer Wayne LaPierre wrote in an op-ed in the Houston Chronicle published in advance of the national gathering.

NRA members proposed solutions such as fixing the mental health system, putting armed guards into schools and enforcing existing federal laws against drug dealers and gang members with guns, LaPierre wrote.

"NRA members exemplify everything that's good and right about America," he wrote.

Those members will be warmly welcomed by leaders in Texas, including Perry and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, both Republicans.

On Wednesday, Perry celebrated the recent move from California to Texas of a company called Shield Tactical, which sells firearm-related gear and training services. Perry's office said the governor has reached out to more than 30 firearms manufacturers in states that are considering curbing guns sales or manufacturing, urging them to move to Texas.

The NRA's opponents are also gearing up for the Houston event. The local chapter of a group called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America plans to demonstrate in support of background-check legislation. Military veterans who disagree with NRA positions on guns plan an "Occupy the NRA" event.

"The NRA leadership actively worked to block background checks for gun sales, spreading lies about the Senate bill," Lauren Weiner, a spokeswoman for the advocacy group Americans United for Change, told reporters on Thursday. "The reality is that the majority of gun owners do, in fact, support these common-sense reforms."

An online Reuters/Ipsos poll released in January showed that 86 percent of Americans surveyed favored expanded background checks of all gun buyers. A CBS News/New York Times poll released on Wednesday showed that 88 percent of Americans support background checks for all gun buyers and that 59 percent are disappointed or angry about the recent Senate vote on gun legislation.

State Representative Garnet Coleman, a Houston Democrat whose district includes the convention center hosting the NRA meeting, will not be among the Texas politicians at the event.

"Clearly, the sales and promotion of firearms is big business," Coleman said. "This is business with politics as the cloak."

LinkedIn Raises Your Profile, Now Lets You Add Photos, Videos, PowerPoints And Comments From Others

Screen Shot 2013-05-01 at 10.58.52LinkedIn today announced another upgrade to its site, part of a bigger plan to add more features and reasons for people to hang around on its pages for longer: this time it’s the turn of profile pages, where users will now be able to add more images, videos, resumes, presentations and comments and likes from other users as part of the mix. While the site continues to add more features to make itself more “social,” profile sharing — that is, the ability to send over a link to someone to be able to view your profile, and then sharing certain aspects of it, such as a resume or presentation — will not be coming today, but a spokesperson says that this will be available soon. The feature is being turned on across the whole of the LinkedIn network starting from today. This will be a useful way for LinkedIn to continue to further its reputation as the go-to place for people looking for jobs, and for professional networking. But it will also help pretty up the general experience. Up to now, regardless of what your profession or job is, every LinkedIn profile looked exactly the same as the other. Now, the idea is that if you’re an architect, you can expand your profile with more dynamic pictures of buildings you’ve designed; or if you’re a tech analyst, you can include links to some of your recent research. No two job seekers are alike. This also means that LinkedIn is introducing one more way that it might, potentially, monetize the site. Although today’s profile features are all free of charge, you can see how, for example, LinkedIn might put a premium on extra services (like Sharing, only “coming soon”), or more storage space — for example to hold more content on your profile page. This also gives LinkedIn an interesting entry into both the area of companies looking to “own” the online profile space, such as About.me and Flavors.me, as well as GetHired, Grouptalent, HireArt, BraveNewTalent, and ResumUp. Today’s news comes on the heels of a number of updates at LinkedIn — all also made to improve the user experience and usefulness of the platform. They include a Contacts update to add in more “personal assistant” life organizing features; new iPhone and Android apps; an expanded search engine; @mentions in status updates; Klout-style endorsements; and a Recruiter homepage redesign for the

Dana White, UFC gave money to Boston bombing victims

UFC president Dana White is proud of his Boston roots. He openly cheers for the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins on Twitter, and he was downright giddy when he announced the UFC would return to Boston on Aug. 17. The Boston Marathon bombing affected him, and he and the UFC responded to the tragedy.

White called the act cowardly:

?How cowardly and disgusting that these people, who lived in the city as long as they did, did that. To put the bag right next to kids, I don?t even like talking about it. It?s just disgusting.

He told the Boston Globe that he and the Fertitta brothers donated personally to the One Fund, which will help the people most affected by the bombings. The UFC and Fox also gave money.

The UFC also did something on a smaller scale that still gave some smiles to Boston UFC fans. The days after UFC 159, they conducted their #Hunt4UFC in Boston. Usually, the UFC only does their Twitter-based scavenger hunt in fight cities. White tweeted locations where Bostonians could find UFC gear. On Monday, Red Sox player and friend of the UFC Shane Victorino participated.

White and the UFC's actions won't erase what happened to Boston, but it can help some of its citizens on the way to recovery.
