(AP) ? Should marijuana be treated like alcohol? Or should it remain in the same legal category as heroin and the most dangerous drugs? Votes this week by Colorado and Washington to allow adult marijuana possession have prompted what could be a turning point in the nation's conflicted and confusing war on drugs.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was to talk Friday by phone with Colorado's governor, who wants to know whether the federal government would sue to block the marijuana measures. Both states are holding off on plans to regulate and tax the drug while waiting to see whether the U.S. Justice Department would assert federal authority over drug law.

The Obama administration has largely turned a blind eye to the 17 states that currently flout federal drug law by allowing people with certain medical conditions to use pot, something banned under federal law.

"In a situation like this, where our law is at loggerheads with federal law, my primary job is to listen first," Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said Wednesday.

Hickenlooper opposed the ballot measure and has downplayed the likelihood of a commercial marijuana market materializing in Colorado.

"Based on federal law, if it's still illegal under federal law, I can't imagine that 7-Eleven is ever going to sell it," he said.

Meanwhile, marijuana activists are waiting for a Washington, D.C., federal appeals court to decide whether marijuana should be reclassified from its current status as a dangerous drug with no accepted medical use.

Last year, the Drug Enforcement Administration rejected a petition by medical marijuana advocates to change the classification, which kept marijuana in the same category as drugs such as heroin. Reclassification of marijuana could open the door for more research into its medical use, so marijuana activists consider reclassification a major step.

Marijuana advocates hope the federal government maintains its current posture of mostly ignoring states that flout federal law by allowing medical use under certain circumstances.

The U.S. government has cracked down during the past two years on more than 500 marijuana dispensaries in several states, but no one has faced federal prosecution for personal use.

"It would certainly be a travesty if the Obama administration used its power to impose marijuana prohibition upon a state whose people have declared, through the democratic process, that they want it to end," said Brian Vicente, co-author of Colorado's marijuana measure.

Earlier this week, Justice Department spokeswoman Nanda Chitre said enforcement of the federal Controlled Substances Act remained unchanged.

"In enacting the Controlled Substances Act, Congress determined that marijuana is a Schedule I controlled substance," Chitre said. "We are reviewing the ballot initiative and have no additional comment at this time."

Eric Brown, a spokesman for Hickenlooper, would not say whether the governor planned to disclose the details of his call with Holder.

If Colorado's marijuana ballot measure is not blocked, it would take effect by Jan. 5, the deadline for the governor to add the amendment to the state constitution. The measure allows adults to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, and six marijuana plants, though public use of the drug and driving while intoxicated are prohibited.

Colorado's measure also directs lawmakers to write regulations on how pot can be sold, with commercial sales possible by 2014.

In Washington state, marijuana possession of an ounce or less would become legal on Dec. 6 if the measure is not blocked, though setting up a state-run sales operation would take a year.

Colorado's Republican attorney general, John Suthers, is a vocal critic of marijuana legalization. But he has vowed to defend Colorado's constitutional amendment in a legal battle with the federal government.

Marijuana business owners gathered in Denver for a two-day conference cheered the votes ? but kept a close eye on their smartphones for word of a federal response.

Denver attorney Robert Corry told the crowd at the National Marijuana Business Conference that President Barack Obama sent a signal about marijuana when he made a record number of campaign visits to the battleground state this year and never talked about the marijuana vote.

"Silence equals consent. The time for the federal government to talk about marijuana legalization is over. The election has passed," Corry said to applause from the crowd. "Marijuana got 50,000 more votes than Obama on Tuesday. Don't think they didn't notice that."

But Corry quickly added that the federal marijuana approach will ultimately decide the question.

"Let's face it: the federal government is a fearsome force. They have the guns, they have the jails, they have the power," he said.

Screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire Talks Poltergeist Remake

David-Lindsay-Abaire-poltergeist-slice

Earlier today, Steve spoke with Rise of the Guardians screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire about the upcoming film (you can click here for Steve?s thoughts on the movie).? Lindsay-Abaire is also writing the upcoming remake of Tobe Hooper?s 1982 classic horror film, Poltergeist, which is being produced by Sam Raimi.? During the interview, Lindsay-Abaire spoke about his progress developing the script, the tone he?s going for, capturing the emotion of the original, and the film?s priority for the studio.

Hit the jump for a transcript of what Lindsay-Abaire had to say.

poltergeist-posterCollider:? One of the ones you?re working on that I?m very excited about is Poltergeist.? How is that going?? Are you still working on it?? Can you give fans an update?

DAVID LINDSAY-ABAIRE: [laughs] Well, you know there?s not too much I can say.? I will say that I handed in a second draft and people are incredibly excited about it.? They?re not the director, but they?re in search of a director.? I will also say that there are very few people who are as obsessed with the original movie as I am, so I would try to write a script that I would want to see as a fan.? I will say that.

When you wrote it, did you write it more for a PG-13 or an R?

LINDSAY-ABAIRE:? [hesitates] My version is not a gory, horrible?it?s tonally similar to the first movie, and that?s sort of family-friendly-esque with some real, genuine scares in it.? It?s not Saw if that?s what you?re asking.? I?m not trying to turn it into something else.

One of the most famous scenes in Poltergeist is under the bed.? For those who haven?t seen it, I won?t say more than that.? But as a kid, that scared the shit out of me.? Was that a scene that meant a lot for you?

LINDSAY-ABAIRE: That scene and that vibe meant a tremendous amount to me, and that was the thing I was trying to emulate most in my draft.? That movie also has some much-needed humor in it and some emotion in it, so all of that exists.

Has the studio said anything about when they want to film this?? Is it a priority for them?

LINDSAY-ABAIRE: It?s definitely a priority for them.? As far as the ?when? of it, I don?t know what that means, but they have said in no uncertain terms that it is a priority for them.

Look for the full interview with David Lindsay-Abaire soon.

NASA may unveil new manned moon missions

NASA is serious about sending astronauts back to the moon's neighborhood and will likely unveil its ambitious plans soon now that President Barack Obama has been re-elected, experts say.

The space agency has apparently been thinking about setting up a manned outpost beyond the moon's far side, both to establish a human presence in deep space and to build momentum toward a planned visit to an asteroid in 2025.

The new plans have probably already been cleared with the Obama Administration but have been kept under wraps in case Republican candidate Mitt Romney won Tuesday night's (Nov. 6) presidential election, said space policy expert John Logsdon, a professor emeritus at George Washington University.

    1. Mars rover snaps spooky self-portraits

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: It looks as if someone is taking portraits of NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars from a few feet away ? but who's the photographer?

    2. Countdown to a total solar eclipse
    3. Light from first stars in universe spotted
    4. Spacewalkers troubleshoot leaky radiator

"NASA has been evolving its thinking, and its latest charts have inserted a new element of cislunar/lunar gateway/Earth-moon L2 sort of stuff into the plan," Logsdon told SPACE.com. (The Earth-moon L2 is a so-called libration point where the two bodies' gravitational pulls roughly balance out, allowing spacecraft to essentially park there.) [ Gallery: Visions of Deep-Space Station Missions ]

"They've been holding off announcing that until after the election," Logsdon added, noting that Romney had pledged to reassess and possibly revise NASA's missions and direction.

New vision of human space exploration
In 2010, President Obama directed NASA to work toward sending astronauts to a near-Earth asteroid by 2025, then on to the vicinity of Mars by the mid-2030s. To reach such deep-space destinations, the agency is developing a huge rocket called the Space Launch System (SLS) and a crew capsule named Orion.

But astronauts likely won't head straight to a space rock when SLS and Orion are ready to fly together in 2021. In the last year, word has begun leaking out that NASA wants to explore Earth-moon L2, a point in space that lies beyond the moon's far side, as a precursor.

Rumors currently point toward parking a spacecraft at the Earth-moon L2 gateway, so NASA (and perhaps international partners) can learn more about supporting humans in deep space. Astronauts stationed there could also aid in lunar exploration ? by teleoperating rovers on the moon's surface, for example.

NASA officials think they can pull off such manned missions without busting their budget, which stands at $17.7 billion in the proposed 2013 federal budget.

"They're not talking about plans that imply significant budget increases," Logsdon said. "It gives a more focused use for SLS and Orion before an asteroid mission."

Moon missions coming soon?
Exploration of Earth-moon L2 could get started as early as 2021 with the first manned flight of SLS and Orion, which NASA calls Exploration Mission 2. (Exploration Mission 1 is the initial, unmanned test launch of SLS, slated for late 2017.)

"I'm not privy to the specifics of this, but one could conceive of the second SLS mission being the start of activity in cislunar space, rather than just being a lunar orbit mission," Logsdon said.

We may know soon enough. NASA higher-ups have dropped hints recently that a big announcement may indeed be in the offing before too much longer.

"We just recently delivered a comprehensive report to Congress outlining our destinations which makes clear that SLS will go way beyond low-Earth orbit to explore the expansive space around the Earth-moon system, near-Earth asteroids, the moon, and ultimately, Mars," NASA deputy chief Lori Garver said at a conference in September.

"Let me say that again: We're going back to the moon, attempting a first-ever mission to send humans to an asteroid and actively developing a plan to take Americans to Mars," Garver added.

SEO Made Easy ? Marketing Your Business Online

Published 06/11/2012

By Mark Alexander, landlord and founder of Property118

Initially for my own records, I produced a document called ?SEO Made Easy ? Marketing Your Business Online?. It is based on several years experience in internet marketing and website development.

After you have read this document you will probably know more about Search Engine Optimisation than the person who built your website for you.

As many of the readers of Property118 have business interests of their own (for example as Letting Agents, Accountants, tradesmen, Professional Bodies?etc.) I?ve decided to offer you a copy of this document as a PDF download. It will take you step by step through Search Engine Optimisation in plain English.?You don?t have to be an IT geek to understand it I can assure you. I tested it on the lawyers I work with and many of them ?are not very IT savvy at all, to some of them a Cardex system is modern technology! Others are a bit more up to date and have learned to use a fax machine LOL

?But what does Mark Alexander know about SEO, internet marketing and web-development?? you might well ask!

OK, you know me as a property man and?Consultant?to a law firm. Therefore, I need to blow my own trumpet a bit here so please?forgive?me. The very fact that I teach Search Engine Optimisation to lawyers might give you a clue that I know a fair bit about the subject. It really isn?t a good idea to bullshit a large group of lawyers!

My first business was ranked as number 38 in The Sunday Times Profit Track 100 in 2008, I retired from it in 2009. One of the main reasons it was so successful is that we used the internet to generate literally 1,000?s of leads every month.

To add some fun to the ?SEO Made Easy? document and the training I provide to lawyers on this subject I created a web-page to demonstrate what could be achieved. You can find it by searching Google for ?Business Lawyers Norwich?. The profile ranks number one in the search results, just below the paid adverts, despite the fact that it is a profile of a spoof law firm called Nickit & Leggett which is run by the two old men from The Muppets.

You will also find that most of the articles written on Property118 also appear on page one of Google searches based on the Keywords or phrases in the article title. However, if you think that an article title is the key to SEO I?m sorry to say that it really isn?t, it?s just a tiny part of what is required.

My SEO Made Easy PDF document includes an easy to follow, step by step guide to ?on-page? Search Engine Optimisation, how to get more links to your website and details of my preferred software and plugins. It is?concise?too ? just over 16,000 words on six pages.

My prefererence is for this information to be read and used by regular readers of Property118 so I?ve only advertised it here for now and I?m offering the download at a very special price to cover my time and costs invested into this project. Helping readers of Property118 to grow their business and gaining testimonials as a result of that is my primary motive at this stage. I plan to sell this download for significantly more via other portals as soon as I get enough testimonials.?Therefore, if you want to be sure to get hold of your copy at the very special introductory price of just ?37 you really need to act now ? see below.

Satisfaction Guaranteed

I only want happy customers. Therefore, to guarantee that you have nothing to lose I have decided to make this promise to you. If you are not entirely satisfied with the document just email me within 3 days explaining why and I personally guarantee to refund your money, whether I agree with you or not.

To download your copy of my SEO Made Easy PDF document please complete the form below.

Yet to be?convinced?

OK, here?s the introduction to give you an idea of the style and the section heading for the remainder of the document ?.

INTRODUCTION

Getting your business to show on page one of Google results for a specific keyword or phrase has become the ?Holy Grail? for marketing departments of most businesses.

The methodology of achieving Google page one presence is surrounded by mystique. A common misconception exists that the Google algorithm is some dark kept secret, a code which geeks the world over are trying to break.

Nothing could be further from the truth but the IT industry don?t share this truth as it is not in their interests to do so. Anybody can download the Google algorithm from the US patents office and Google?s own Head of Quality (Matt Cutts) even has a You Tube channel which updates anybody who is interested on new or proposed amendment to the Google algorithm. Google want their search engine users to find what they are looking for with ease. The problem is that most businesses and the people designing their websites don?t have the slightest idea how to help Google to achieve their objective and there are others who try to beat the system so the algorithm has to be constantly updated, the basic rules very rarely change though.

Most website designers are exactly that ? DESIGNERS. They don?t know the first thing about SEO, they don?t need to, they simply bamboozle small businesses with ?geek speak? and fancy brochure style websites. Just because a web-site looks nice and does clever things does not mean it will be found. Most websites I look at are like well stocked shops, full of bargains, yet located in the North Pole, i.e. they are rarely visited.

The PDF document you can download explains:-

  • exactly what Google are looking for ? it?s a simple filing system really
  • how easy it is to provide Google with the right information to rank your web-pages
  • how to rank your website pages on page one of Google for the search term you want to be found
  • the?relevance?of Page Rank and website links
  • how we persuaded over 700 websites to link to Property118
  • my?preferred?website platform
  • how to avoid the SEO sharks

The document also goes on to explain:-

  • What Google wants to see
  • Meta Description and Meta Title
  • Key Words in the first sentence/paragraph
  • Optimal page length and headings
  • Optimising Pictures
  • Why Google hates plagiarism and how they detect it
  • Keyword Density and Related Search Terms
  • Why many websites make much work and the alternatives
  • Relevance, Authority and Popularity
  • Making it all match up
  • Ease of implementation
  • My preferred website platform and plugins
  • Beware the sharks
  • The value of links
  • Google Page Rank
  • Why simple isn?t always obvious

Satisfaction Guaranteed

I only want happy customers. Therefore, to guarantee that you have nothing to lose I have decided to make this promise to you.?If you are not entirely satisfied with the document just email me within 3 days explaining why and I personally guarantee to refund your money, whether I agree with you or not.

So download my SEO Made Easy document in PDF format now whilst you have the opportunity to get it for the special price available exclusively to Property118 readers of just ?37.
