Northern lights shine through a magnetic crack

Andrei Penescu

The northern lights shimmer over Kangerlussuaq in Greenland on Feb. 27. "Out for about two hours in -36 degrees Celsius until my fingers gave up, but what a nice show!" Andrei Penescu told SpaceWeather.com. "I didn't get out too far from the town, and had a lot of light pollution, but the aurora was very bright."

By Alan Boyle

A "crack" in Earth's magnetic field has opened the way for yet another thrilling display of the northern lights near the top of the world.

We're in the middle of an upswing in the sun's 11-year activity cycle, leading up to an expected peak in 2013. If solar storms get too intense, there could be a heightened risk of outages in satellite communication and electrical grids. But fortunately, the only significant effects from the solar outbursts so far have come in the form of heightened auroras, occasionally ranging as far south as Nebraska.

Auroras arise due to the interaction of Earth's magnetosphere with electrically charged particles streaming from the sun. That interaction energizes atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen in the ionosphere, causing ripples of greenish and reddish light between 60 and 200 miles up in Earth's polar regions.

SpaceWeather.com's Tony Phillips reports that the interplanetary magnetic field tipped south this week and opened a crack in our planet's magnetic shield to fuel a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm. The Space Weather Prediction Center said the storm was sparked by particles sent out from the sun during an eruption last Friday.

You can see the atmospheric physics at work in the picture above, captured by Andrei Penescu in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, on Feb. 27. Fittingly, Kangerlussuaq is home to the Sondrestrom Upper Atmospheric Research Facility, a project that studies the aurora and other atmospheric phenomena.

Here are a few other photos from this week's auroral displays, plus two video extras. One is "Temporal Distortion," a time-lapse tribute to the aurora and other wonders of the night sky by Dakotalapse photographer Randy Halverson. It includes some of the auroral imagery we featured back in October, and features original music by Bear McCreary, the award-winning composer for TV shows such as "Walking Dead" and "Battlestar Galactica."

The other is David Peterson's compilation of time-lapse videos captured by astronauts on the International Space Station, including some primo views of the aurora from above. Here's what NASA's Mike Fossum, a former space station resident, had to say about the clip: "This is the best video I've seen from photos we took on ISS! Stunning!!"

Can't argue with that...

Aaro Kukkohovi

Finland's Aaro Kukkohovi saw an aurora of a different color burst forth on Feb. 27 in the skies over Lumijoki. "I've never seen anything close to this," Kukkohovi told SpaceWeather.com. "What a fantastic burst of energy - like something blew a hole into Earth's magnetic field just above us." For more from Kukkohovi, check out the gallery at the LumiSoft website.

AuroraMAX / CSA

The AuroraMAX wide-angle camera snapped this picture of the northern lights over Yellowknife in Canada's Northwest Territories early Feb. 27. For more from AuroraMAX, check out the project's website and Twitpic gallery.

Randy Halverson's "Temporal Distortion" time-lapse sky video features an original score by composer Bear McCreary.

David Peterson's compilation of space station videos is accompanied by "Freedom Fighters" by Two Steps From Hell.

(AP) ? The Japanese government withheld information about the full danger of last year's nuclear disaster from its own people and from the United States, putting U.S.-Japan relations at risk in the first days after the accident, according to an independent report released Tuesday.

The report, compiled from interviews with more than 300 people, delivers a scathing view of how leaders played down the risks of the meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant that followed a massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The report by the private Rebuild Japan Initiative Foundation also paints a picture of confusion during the days immediately after the accident. It says the U.S. government was frustrated by the scattered information provided by Japan and was skeptical whether it was true.

The U.S. advised Americans to leave an area within 50 miles (80 kilometers) of the plant, far bigger than the 12-mile (20-kilometer) Japanese evacuation area, because of concerns that the accident was worse than Japan was reporting.

The misunderstandings were gradually cleared up after a bilateral committee was set up on March 22 and began regular meetings, according to the 400-page report.

The report, compiled by scholars, lawyers and other experts, credits then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan for ordering Tokyo Electric Power Co., the utility running the plant, not to withdraw its staff and to keep fighting to bring it under control.

TEPCO's president at the time, Masataka Shimizu, called Kan on March 15 and said he wanted to abandon the plant and have all 600 TEPCO staff flee, the report said. That would have allowed the situation to spiral out of control, resulting in a much larger release of radiation.

A group of about 50 workers was eventually able to bring the plant under control.

TEPCO, which declined to take part in the investigation, has denied it planned to abandon Fukushima Dai-ichi. The report notes the denial, but says Kan and other officials had the clear understanding that TEPCO had asked to leave.

But the report criticizes Kan for attempting to micromanage the disaster and for not releasing critical information on radiation leaks, thereby creating widespread distrust of the authorities among Japanese.

Kan's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the report.

Kan acknowledged in a recent interview with The Associated Press that the release of information was sometimes slow and at times wrong. He blamed a lack of reliable data at the time and denied the government hid such information from the public.

It will take decades to fully decommission Fukushima Dai-ichi. Although one of the damaged reactor buildings has been repaired, others remain in shambles. A group of journalists, including a reporter from The Associated Press, were given a tour of the plant on Tuesday.

Workers have used tape to mend cracks caused by freezing weather in plastic hoses on temporary equipment installed to cool the hobbled reactors.

"I have to acknowledge that they are still rather fragile," plant chief Takeshi Takahashi said of the safety measures.

The area is still contaminated with radiation, complicating the work. It already has involved hundreds of thousands of workers, who have to quit when they reach the maximum allowed radiation exposure of 100 millisieverts a year.

The report includes a document describing a worst-case scenario that Kan and the chief of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission secretly discussed two weeks after the disaster.

That scenario involved the possibility of more nuclear fuel rods burning, causing the release of more radiation and requiring the evacuation of a much wider region, including Tokyo.

The report also concludes that government oversight of nuclear plant safety had been inadequate, ignoring the risk of tsunami and the need for plant design renovations, and instead clinging to a "myth of safety."

"The idea of upgrading a plant was taboo," said Koichi Kitazawa, a scholar who heads the commission that prepared the report. "We were just lucky that Japan was able to avoid the worst-case scenario. But there is no guarantee this kind of luck will prevail next time."

The Benefits Of Drinking Organic Coffee : Mortgage Broker Fraud?

Feb

26

More and more people are turning their attention to living their lives in a more responsible way. They have begun a recycling plan and are working hard to conserve energy. They are also being more earth friendly in their food and drink choices. One simple way that has been discovered to be more earth friendly is to switch to using organic coffee. When someone chooses the coffee that is made from organic coffee beans, they are making a very earth friendly decision. The benefits that come with drinking coffee that is organic are many. To begin with, the traditional coffee is more harmful than this coffee. To keep the bugs off of the traditional coffee beans, pesticides are sprayed on the plants. There are still pesticides on the coffee beans that are ground up when the traditional coffee is packaged. Even the small doses of these pesticides can lead to a number of severe health issues.

You will not only be helping your body to be healthy when you choose the organic types of coffee but you will also be doing your part to help the environment. When someone grows organic type coffee, they must adhere to the guidelines that are in place. The government regulates the growers of these crops to ensure that they are following each one without skipping any steps.

One of the regulations that are place on organic coffee growers is that the beans must be planted and grown under the shade of trees. The plants should not be exposed to full sunlight. The beans will have just the right amount of nourishment from the sun when the small beams flow through the branches of the trees. This practice allows the beans to grow at a slower rate which makes them taste much richer.

Organic coffee beans cannot have the harmful pesticides and chemicals on them. In order to allow the beans to grow to their full maturity, all natural fertilizers and composts are used. When you drink your coffee you will now be rid of the harmful chemicals. The earth will not be filled with these chemicals either.

These coffee beans will be planted in soil that has been completely free from chemicals for a specific number of years. When crops treated with chemicals were grown on a particular piece of land, that land cannot be used to grow organic foods. There are tests completed on the land before any planting is done to make sure the guidelines are adhered to.

These regulations do add some time to the growing time for these plants. There are also more manual processes involved in growing these plants. The price of the organic coffee is raised some due to these things. While the difference is not really that great, it is still more costly than traditional coffee. The benefits to your health and the environment are well worth the small difference in price.

Traditional coffee flavors can also be found in the organic brands when you look for them in your grocery store. There may even be some on the shelf that you could not get in a traditional coffee. The all natural ingredients that are used to create these wonderful tastes are all organic as well.

If you were to spend a little time looking online you would also find that you can find some really great types of coffee that are organic and that taste amazing. You will not need to look in your grocery store for these coffees as they will be delivered right to your door step.

ICE names new chief for South Florida

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has named a new chief for its South Florida office.

The agency announced recently that Alysa D. Erichs is the new special agent in charge of the Miami-based office. Erichs had been the acting chief. The office's jurisdiction runs from Key West to Fort Pierce and it has 450 employees.

Erichs was previously a deputy special agent in charge of the Miami office and was acting chief of the Dallas office as well. She also worked at ICE headquarters in Washington and was a criminal investigator for the Internal Revenue Service before her customs career began.

Erichs replaces Anthony Mangione, who is facing a May trial on child pornography charges. Mangione retired from ICE shortly after he was charged. He has pleaded not guilty.

This is just kinda venting while looking for some answers too. Please no ass hole answers, if you think its retarded just move on.

So i met this girl, very cute girl. The kind that (atleast for me) when i see i kinda assume that i have no chance. Anyways blah blah blah shes georgeous and once we started talking i realized how awesome she really is. So we've been talking for a month or so. As highschool as it sounds, we text a lot. And everytime we talk i always initiate the conversation, weather its texting or calling. I didnt talk to her for a few days thinking " okay if she really still wants to talk then She will eventually initiate the conversation." But still...no. The confusing part is that everytime we talk shes real flurty and always telling me how sweet i am and everything. Makes no sense.

We almost never hangout! She talks like she wants to but It never ends up happeing, which i also dont get because everytime we have been together we,ve had lots of fun. I'm Ligitimataly confused!! Help/insight appriciated

What do you and a magic 8 ball have in common?

1. Kinda boring but safe
2. Give random arbitrary advice if needed
3. Cheap and quick entertainment in the form of text
4. Not really that special
5. Disposable, it would be easy to go get another one

Are you being played?

Truth hurts mate, don't believe me then I don't give a shit.

It doesnt take a month to turn a girls switch to the "on" position.

She may really have come to like you or respect you as a person but if you fail to escalate she will lose interest in you.

I know from experience. you have to be the one to initiate contact, every relationship needs you to put more into it than you will ever get out of it.

I dont mind initiating the conversation but i feel like since i do every single time maybe she doesnt want to talk and is just annoyed but wont tell me since thats what shy girls do in a new relationship. I guess its just something you go for and either win or loose

What do you mean by "go for it"?? How would you presumably go about executing this?? I just want to get an idea about where your head is at.

What do you want to do?? You are testing her, which means you are playing a game, and she's not playing back.? Doesn't sound like she's terribly into you.?

You can keep initiating contact and see where it goes, or you can let the experiment go.? There is a pretty good chance she won't ever text you back if you leave it to her.? It sucks but it's a real possibility.

I've had to be the initiator of texting/calling with girls before. Sometimes I ended up getting laid and the girls? liked me just fine. But yeah, if I were you, I'd go a while without sending her something.

The more iffy part though is that she doesn't want to hangout.

If you're gonna get her, step up your game. Takes some risks, be free around her, reject fear that you might lose her. Up your swagger around her and see what happens. Make a move if you get the chance. Flirt and shit, tease her, find ways to let her know you think she's sexy.

Don't want her, get her.

1 stop playing the game.
2 ask her if shes seeing anyone. you dont have to be blunt about it if you do.
3 if she is or isnt ask her if she wants to catch a few drinks sometime.
instead of connecting through text, connect with her through actual talking face to face.
then you'll both know if you wanna take it more than friends(assuming shes single).

If you just want a texting relationship, I am sure you can find plenty of stupid girls to do this, but it's nothing but a big waste of time.

People that live busy productive lives don't sit there and text about bullshit, this is for children.

If she does not want to hang out, dump the bitch, why waste time on her?? Time to grow a set of balls dude.

Unless your someone that she is already interested in, this probably was not a good thing.? It's obvious she's not crushing on you so complementing her like that weakens your position.? You probably gave up any shroud of mystery surrounding your attraction for her.? No mystery -> no tension -> no fun.

Super attractive women get complimented constantly, that was your chance to set your self apart from every other text-buddy she's ever had.

Heh.
I want what you are looking for too...
To know the other person is as into you as you are.
If not, please just tell me so I will stop wasting my time.
As a girl I will say this.
I have done exactly what she is doing, I wasn't that interested in the person. Fun to talk too, and when I was in a weak state of mind he was there. I din't have a heart to break it to him...so instead I crushed his heart as my heart is crushed now.

Telling her multiple times that she's sexy weakened your game dude. Believe me, she remembers each times you told her. You handed the ball over to her and told her what you were interested in, sex.

Girls that are hot don't need to be told. They would rather hear things like "You look nice" or "wow, you look really good tonight".

Not "damn baby you are sexy!"
